Would I benefit from a CPU upgrade?

Hello everyone,

So I know you probably get this question all the time but I've been curious about how a CPU upgrade might benefit my system in at this current moment in time and if its even worse considering. You see since building my system about a year and a half ago I've constantly been worried that my current CPU might be bottle necking my GPU in some areas of my PC experience, especially when it comes to games. Below are my current specs:

Windows 10.
Intel i5 6600K 3.9GHz (I have overclocked this but have struggled to find a decent balance).
MSI Nvidia GTX 1070.
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400mHZ.
Corsair AX 760 PSU.

So I originally went with the i5 6600K thinking it would suit my needs and to be fair it as for most 1080p gaming but I constantly feel like it might be limiting the potential of the GTX 1070 to stretch its legs. Right now I'm mainly targeting 1080p/60fps for the vast majority of games but have noticed performance problems with one or two games. Would an i7 be a better pairing for the GTX 1070 and give the GPU more leg room?

I'd appreciate any advice and help, its something I've been curious about for a while now and sometimes its hard to tell what areas might be affecting performance. I'm looking to do some performance tests with some of these games to see if my CPU might be the issue.

Thanks for reading, much appreciated.

You forgot to mention the make and model of your motherboard. I'm assuming it's a Z170 series chipset. Do you plan on migrating to a Kabylake or a Skylake i7? On another note, you'd also benefit from getting higher frequency ram but I'm a little baffled, at 108p gaming, you should be more than fine with your current setup.
