Old age makes gaming more difficult

I've been playing games since I was a nipper and have grown up through 4 decades of tech and witnessed the vast improvements In everything. Ive always enjoyed gaming but recently I've become a victim of old age. I'm playing doom the latest version and rocking on ultra everything settings at 60fps. Flawless graphics and silky smooth gameplay no matter how much is going on.. but im getting killed rather too quickly. I fear im getting too old and slow to keep up with the enemies. Has anyone else in the 40+ year old group of gamers noticed this or is the game just harder than the previous versions?

Solution

Nah, I love the latest doom, and find it quite responsive - but not responsive enough, not compared to the old shooters anyways. It is...
hehe , ah yes we are no longer quick whipper-snappers aren't we? past my 50th, and though I am able to keep up on games like PUBG and such , games like COD WWII and such games have become the xbox type gaming for 15 year old run and gun.. aimlessly racing around and firing at everything they see, is it truly gaming to be honest is the game, when you place them in a more realistic setting like PUBG they are always complaining about how difficult it is..

I think when you get older, you need to be wiser and play the games your abilities permit (as long as we are not speaking about physical inabilities like arthritis etc.)

Nah, I love the latest doom, and find it quite responsive - but not responsive enough, not compared to the old shooters anyways. It is a function of the rig you be gaming on - I have an oc'd (5ghz) water cooled 3930k, gforce titan, and with a logitek g9 mouse and find that the 4k uhd telly I am using could be called a bit laggy. The acer 120hz 3d monitor I normally use just rolls like a ball bearing on glass, and the bodies fall like rain... I am 56 years old. I go to the gym a bit and eat quite well. What gets me is the number of different control schemes and different devices I use. Just one control scheme to rule them all would be great. I can still catch a fly on the wing by hand and read the fine print on food packaging. So ymmv. Just get up it for the rent, and don't worry about this 'age' shite. Cheers

Reputable
I always pictured myself gaming till it became physically impossible, just adapt the game and realize that COD is for 14year old squeaky voiced mountain dew foaming from their cursing mouths. Perhaps lower difficulty? Im in my earliy 30 though... though as multiplayer is now the deal with games I seldom find the time to finish any single players.... never did try the new Doom. Was abit put off by the scare tactics of the previous titles.

Adapt and accept

I know my reactions have slipped over the last 13 years. I remember dominating in nearly every online match I played of Unreal Tournament 2004 Instagib but these days in modern fast fps games I'm happy if I get in the top 1/2 of my team. It's a little scary as I'm younger than other posters.

I completely understand. My dad is 53 now (even thou he doesn't look it at all) and its me who got him into PC games, the second he exited Vault 101 in Fallout 3 he was hooked.

Though lately i can see he has been struggling in games like Witcher 3, Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored 1 & 2 and also the new Doom all because they can be very fast paced.

It isn't really something you can't resolve, i'm probably gonna get arthritis in my hands when i'm older which sucks.

I don't even try to play most competitive online shooters anymore. In PUBG I'm really good at the 1st phase of stealth and hiding, not so good at the end game fire fight. I still really enjoyed DOOM and I am currently enjoying Wolfenstein II. I like to play games where age, guile and not blindly rushing in make my smarts an advantage. For example: I am good a Rocket League. Instead of playing swarm the ball like 5 year old's on a soccer field, I hang back at midfield on defense. I use my masters degree physics courses to calculate the bounce of the ball and only rush in when I am sure I can score.

The bad part about being an aging gaming is there are things that Father Time are ruining for me. I can't play very long or I will get carpal tunnel syndrome. Last year I upgraded my monitor from 24" to 32" 1080p. People keep asking why didn't you get a 4K monitor?

At the age of 62, I find IKEAs chair MILLBERGET to be quite comfortable. I can sit in it all day without any problems. Only downfall is that the padded armrest coating, where I keep the mouse hand elbow, is starting to pile, after three years.
I have started looking for a gaming chair that can take over, but haven't so far been able to find anything better.

Naturally, I had the "If only I had waited before I bought that computer thing" situation happen to me.
I bought a "leather" Commodore II big mans office chair from Overstock.com - $150. It looks nice but it's basically made in China junk that is 2 pieces of wood with a fancy pad on it. It is not leather. After a hour or so I am painfully aware that I am sitting on a board.

Two months later my Doctor's office was renovating and there were 20 perfectly good office chairs in the dumpster. It is not fancy. It has a low back. But it is very ergonomic, highly adjustable and comfortable. It was $400, 20 years ago but now they sell for $50 and it still looks brand new. My point is, check out a office furniture recycling store. You can find some truly well designed and expensive chairs for a steal.
