Hello,

I am currently in the process of buying a proper work PC that will be used mainly for motion graphics, video editing and 3D. Most of the time will be spent in AE, but I want it to be somewhat future proof as I know 3D will be a part of my workload in the future. Mainly AE, but I will eventually use C4D with Octane. I have built a few systems before so I know the gist, but im stuck at the CPU.

So I want to get the best CPU for my use (AE, C4D, Premier) but I cant decide which road to walk down. More cores or higher clock?

i7, i9 or Xeon? I dont really have a budget (3-6k total for the PC) but I imagine Ill get the best of either i7, i9 or the xeon series. Any recommendations? Ive heard that xeon is best for servers / server machine, and that the i9 (10-18 cores) doesnt run as well as the top i7s.

I do not know if I will be able to overclock as this will be owned by the company I work for, and warranty is therefor an important factor.

As of the rest of the build, Im getting 128 gb ram and starting of with 1x 1080 TI 11GB GDDR5.

Thank you very much!

Regards
Ben

MERGED QUESTION
Question from bnine : "High Budget Work PC / AE & C4D Mainly / Stuck on the CPU"

Hello,

Originally posted in the CPU category, but moved it to systems instead as this is a build question.

I am currently in the process of buying a proper work PC that will be used mainly for motion graphics, video editing and 3D. Most of the time will be spent in AE, but I want it to be somewhat future proof as I know 3D will be a part of my workload in the future. I will eventually use C4D, most likely with Octane. I know Octane uses GPU, but I will still use the standard renderer so the choice of processor is important. I have built a few systems before so I know the gist, but im stuck at the CPU.

So I want to get the best CPU for my use (AE, C4D, Premier) but I cant decide which road to walk down. More cores or higher clock?

i7, i9 or Xeon? The budget is 3-6k total for the PC but I imagine Ill get the best of either i7, i9 or the xeon series (not like 10k processors but the best consumer option). Any recommendations? Ive heard that xeon is best for servers / slave render machines, and that the i9 (10-18 cores) doesnt run as well as the top i7s since AE cant make use of cores higher than 6(?).

I do not know if I will be able to overclock as this will be owned by the company I work for, and warranty is therefor an important factor.

As of the rest of the build, Im getting 128 gb ram, couple of SSDs and a HDD and starting with 1x 1080 TI 11GB GDDR5 (might upgrade later if I end up using C4D / Octane a lot).

Thank you very much!

Regards
Ben

If you're interested you could look into AMD's Threadripper Platform. Where are you located, preferred site for purchase? What would you like included in your build or is that ~6K USD(assuming) budget is all towards the chassis and it's innards...?

Hi Lutfij, thanks for your reply!

It will have to be an intel CPU since Ill be buying the system from a Norwegian website (Komplettbedrift.no) that allows you to pick parts of their list and they will build it for you. And it has to be this site and that sort of "they will build it for me" solution to keep the warranty (also, no overclocking). Currently there are little to none AMD options. I am located in Norway. Yes, that is about 4-6K USD budget for a complete rig (Desktop only, screen and so on is all good).

The main limitation about this site is that you have to first pick your type of PC category and then modify that specific category. So within one category (workstations category), only xeons are available but in a different category (gamer category) i7s and i9s are available. This is something I can somewhat workaround so I dont really worry to much about that. Im just super stuck at which CPU to go for since I really want to get it right the first time around.

Thanks man!

Ben
