Hey there, I am have been having a surprising issue with WoW recently and am hoping that someone has either a solution or knows if this is expected or not.

One of my CPU cores fires up to 98% when playing WoW, it doesn't matter where I am, it just pegs it. I have seen that core hit 100% usage before as well. I am playing on 7 graphics quality and running at a locked 140FPS. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, but it was doing this on Windows 7 as well. Computer specs are as follows:

CPU: i5 7600K (no OC) running at 4.2GHz boost as designed

GPU: XFX RX480 GTR 8GB Black edition (no OC, slight undervolt)

RAM: Crucial Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO

MOBO: MSI Z270 SLI Plus

Windows 10 Home

My CPU temps are well within allowed values as are my GPU temps. Windows is completely up to date and all the DVR stuff is disabled. The computer is completely clear of viruses and malware. I am also using the high performance plan for Windows.

So I get a maxed out single core when running at 140FPS. If I lock my framerate to 60FPS it drops that single core down to around 65% usage. So my question is: is this expected CPU usage? Since I'm running at 144Hz, is WoW using all of that single core just to get that frame rate? If so, is there any harm in running at that usage? I'm quite fond of the smoothness of 140 FPS and would have to get used to 60 again! All testing was done with a completely reset UI, no add-ons, and fresh download of WoW.

Thanks

WoW is an old game, and as such it has usage requirements of an old game. Nearly all older games like WoW used only 1 or 2 cores since this was the standard when the game came out. It's also not a very demanding game where it needs to use more than 1 or 2 cores to function properly.

It's expected for an older game to use only 1 or 2 cores, which at max settings could most definitely peg one of the cores to 100% usage, especially at higher framerates.

So it's not out of the question for it to be maxing out one of my cores when running at 7/10 on the graphics slider? Is this any cause for alarm? Or am I fine running at 144Hz?

Not alarming at all. You're fine running at 144Hz. Just so long as your temps are fine, then there's no reason that you should be worried.
