Peculiar problem with PSU or Motherboard/CPU?

Hi all,

My brother has an interesting problem with his PC. He came to it today and it wouldn't boot. Just no power at all. He's stripped it, cleaned it all out and connected each component one by one. All dandy.

By process of elimination, we believe the issue is with his PSU. When everything is connected it just wont start, even via the test button. We have connected each cable one at a time and discovered that when the 10 and 14 pin cables that connect to his mobo are disconnected from the PSU then the PSU turns on just fine.

We then disconnected the cable from the mother board end but still connected to the PSU and the PSU still wouldn't start again.

What is weird is that if we connect either the 10 pin OR the 14 pin cables by themselves (only the 10 or only the 14, not both) then the PSU starts up like normal. So when both of those cables are connected, the PSU is dead. With one or the other, it works. The cable itself is brand new too since he had an issue similar before.

Any thoughts before we shoot out to buy another PSU?, we don't currently have a spare on hand to test.

1| We'd need to know your full system's specs. Please list them.

2| Could you pass on a picture of the 10pin and 6 pin power connector you're speaking of?

3| If the system doesn't power up with the bare minimum's(if you have iGPU) then the issue is your PSU. You could borrow/use a PSU of reliable quality and brand with more than enough wattage to see if the system boots.

This is the PSU he is using. The 10 and 14 pin plugs go at the top. My apologies for saying 16 pin originally, I don't know where i pulled that number from. I'll edit the original post.

The 24pin atx part at the top is what im talking about. If we plug just the 10 pin side OR the 14 pin side, it works. If both the 10 and 14 plugs are connected at the same time the PSU is just dead. We disconnected the PSU from everything but the wall socket and when the test button is held on the PSU it starts up. Once both of those 2 cables are in, the PSU becomes a brick.

I'll get the rest of his specs from him, only thing I know off hand is that he has 2 GTX780's in it.
