New SSD now none of my SATA ports recognize hard drives

I recently got a new SSD from CraigsList (bad idea, now that I think about it), and after switching around my SATA and power cables, none of my SATA ports are recognizing that I have a hard drive connected to them.

I'm using:
M5A78L-M motherboard
AMD FX 8350
Crucial 120GB SSD
WD Blue 1TB HDD

After I re-powered my hard drives, I noticed a slightly burnt plastic smell emanating from my case, so I turned the power off. Now none of my SATA drives recognize any of my hard drives.

I changed power cables during this process, but switching cables back didn't really do anything to help the problem.

If you happen to have another pc lying around that you can plug them into and load up diskpart on see if you can get them to be recognized. If so then its the connectors on the motherboard. If not then it's most likely the drives or perhaps the cables. If you do have another pc it'll have at least one data cable in it. If your drives don't get recognized on their other try using the cable that's already in it to test one drive at a time just in case it's the cables. Worst case scenario is the motherboard. Second worst is your drives. Most worst is both. If you don't have another pc try going to a local shop that deals in computerswith your drives in hand and telling them your issue and ask them if you can test to see if your drives get...

you say you noticed a burning plastic smell. sounds like you burned something. as for what you'd have to do a detailed look through of all your hardware.

If this is just a fluke try going into bios and making sure that your HDD settings are set up properly for recognizing the SSD.

The problem with doing that it was previously working, and changing the SATA power cable has made none of my hard drives recognized at all. From tracing the smell, it seems as though the SSD is the culprit.

Do you think that my SATA ports are burnt out from a bad power cord? If so, any solution to that? Also, not sure why all six would simultaneously get fried while my motherboard, on the whole, seems unscathed.

if you have a windows installation on a usb drive try booting that up from start up and going into the repair options and going to the command line and doing the following:
type:
DiskPart - press enter
ListDisk - press enter

and see if it recognizes any of your disks.

If not try resetting the bios to see if there is a setting that somehow changed itself.

If diskpart does recognize one disk but not the other then it's the other disk that is bad and is causing a problem when plugged in.

If diskpart recognizes both disks then there is something else entirely that is wrong.

Diskpart does not recognize either disk. Any further suggestions? I feel like the SATA ports may have been fried, but I'm not sure why that would happen.

Thanks for your help so far!
