About a month ago I started having an issue with my computer. When I play games in fullscreen they run fine for about an hour, then minimize all on their own. I can return to the game by clicking on them in the taskbar but about a minute after going back to it the game minimizes again. Once I maximize it for the second time it stays up for around an hour before this process repeats itself. The only solution I've found so far has been to play games in borderless fullscreen, but this is not ideal. I'm using Windows 10 in case that has any bearing.

No the windows version has no bearing in this issue. Actually, it seems that some Anti Virus software/ Application or other software pop up is occuring that is minimizing your games. happened to be once.

Just check the task manager to take note applications and services running in background while launching the game. take screenshots to observe which were the running tasks/applications/services.
Now right after the minimize, open up the task manager again and repeat the process. You may find some additional process or app has showed up. That particular program causes the minimizing. Do disable it and voila! Things should get back to normal. :)

I found what I think is the culprit. A background process called Akamai NetSession Instal... (the rest was cut off due to the size of the task manager). I'm now looking into how to handle this. I'm not sure what exactly uses Akamai NetSession and based on a browse through the companies they work with I found a few companies that are relevant to my interests. Among them are MSI, the maker of my laptop. If I disable or remove Akamai NetSession on/from my computer is there a chance I could break something? I guess what I'm asking specifically is does Akamai have anything to do directly with the playing of games or running of software that I might need to keep it around for?

Yes that may well be the cause for minimize. It is a secure application which is mainly used for media streaming, video chats etc. through a specific server service.

It is not that important for any hardware or software related functions of your laptop and it is not mandatory. So try uninstalling that software while gaming and if you are doing some heavy duty streaming or video chats, you can always install it back.
