Worth Replacing Default Modem/Router on Xfinity

I recently moved into a new 2BR, which I share with my girlfriend and about 6 PCs and other devices between us. In the complex Xfinity is included with the condo fee, specifically their performance plan - 25 down and 5 up. The router/modem we were given is an ARRIS TG1682G, and performance is variable - sometimes fast, sometimes not, and wireless is flaky on some devices (ethernet has been pretty solid). I'm not paying a monthly fee for the modem because it's a negotiated package, so there aren't cost savings to not using the included. Would I likely see dramatically different speeds on ethernet or wireless with my own network hardware?

Solution
Wireless could be as easy as being on the same channel as half the neighbors, especially if no one has changed default channels. A quick scan with an android app like Wifi Analyzer will show whats being used and the best channel for you to use. That might help clear up the wifi problems.
