Im looking to buy 2 new ssds for my system, a 850 evo 1tb for my games and a 960 m.2 evo for my new boot drive. I have a asrock z97 motherboard extreme 6, i5 4690k and a gtx 1070. When reading to install the 960 m.2 evo on my motherboard it states "*if M2_1 slot is occupied, PCIE2 slot will run at 8x mode, and PCIE4 slot will run at 4x mode". My first question is will installing the 960 evo decrease graphics card performance as the my graphics card slot now runs at 8x mode compared to 16x.

Now what I also dont understand is do I have to install the m.2 in the first m.2 slot, could I possibly install it in the other m.2 slot and not lose performance on the graphics card slot. Here is the paragraph from my motherboards manual
"M.2_SSD (NGFF) Module Installation Guide
The M.2, also known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a small size and versatile card edge connector that aims to replace mPCIe and MSATA. The Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M.2 PCi Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32Gb/s). The M.2_SSD (NGFF) Socket 3 (M2_2) can accommodate either a M.2 SATA 3 6.0 Gb/s module or a M.2 PCi Express module up to Gen 2 2x (10Gb/s). Please be noted taht the M.2_SSD (NGFF) Socket 3 (M2_2) is shared with the SATA Express connector: you can only choose either the M.2_SSD (NGFF) Socket 3 (M2_2) or the SATA express connector to use.
*The M.2_SSD (NGFF) Socket 3 supports SSD drives. Please note that the WiFi or other non-SSD M.2 modules are not supported."

Im really a noob at these kind of things and would really appreciate someones advice. Please help!

Solution

Your just going to have to choose between two trade-offs.

1. Plug your 960 EVO drive into (M2_1) M.2 Ultra socket to get full speed from your SSD [Gen3 x4 (32Gb/s)] but sacrifice some speed from your GTX 1070 video card running in the PCIE2 slot...

I also have a 2tb hard drive but yes I would like to run all that

That's not problem, you have 10 Sata ports. I'll try and write out a quick simple explanation you can understand. All of this confused me at first also.

thank you very much

You have two M.2 sockets on your motherboard. The first (M2_1) ASRock calls Ultra because it runs up to the full Gen.3 x4 (32Gb/s) of all modern M.2 sockets. The second (M2_2) M.2 socket only runs up to Gen.2 2x (10Gb/s), much slower.

Also remember any Sata drive [like your 850 EVO], even if it's M.2, will only run up to 6Gb/s.

So if you plug your 960 EVO M.2 drive into the second (M2_2) M.2 socket, it will be limited to no more than 10Gb/s.

so what would be the best setup?

Your just going to have to choose between two trade-offs.

1. Plug your 960 EVO drive into (M2_1) M.2 Ultra socket to get full speed from your SSD [Gen3 x4 (32Gb/s)] but sacrifice some speed from your GTX 1070 video card running in the PCIE2 slot at x8 speed instead of it's full x16 speed.

or

2. Plug your 960 EVO drive into (M2_2) M.2 socket and limit it to Gen2 x2 (10Gb/s), but let your GTX 1070 video card run in PCIE2 slot at it's full x16 speed.

That's just the limitation of a Z97 chipset vs newer Z170, Z270 and Z370 chipsets which have more PCIe lanes.

Him thanks, it would still be a worth wild investment to get the 2 ssd and later down the line when I upgrade cpu and motherboard I can use them then. I think i will just go for the M2_2 slot because I will still see a huge increase in performance compared to my current mechanical hard drive. Thanks for the help

From further reading apparently 8x vs 16x performance is minimal in gaming so will most likely put the m.2 is the first slot thank you very much for your help
