I've been using an optical disk HDD caddy in my laptop for a good maybe 8 months now? 1TB drive as a secondary. My laptop froze up today and I had to do a forced shutdown and now the caddy drive isn't detected at all, in disk management, device manager or BIOS. I haven't actually tested if the drive itself is fried but is there anything software based I can check?

Solution
The first thing you have to try is to test the drive itself. Since it is apparently not being detected in the current system it's a possibility that the drive is defective. There's also a chance that the caddy itself has become defective for one reason or another and that's what's causing the problem. Obviously if you have another HHD or SSD you can install that drive in the caddy to determine if it's the caddy that's defective.

The most practical course of action is to install the HDD in another PC as an internally-connected drive and determine whether you can test its health with a HDD diagnostic program. If the drive isn't detected in that system that's an indication you're dealing with a defective drive.
