Cannot boot from second hard drive

So I have bought an SSD and installed it in the ODD of my laptop (HP EliteBook 2540p), to have both a SSD and HDD in it. Got it visible and cloned my old disk to it following this tutorial (https://www.howtogeek.com/97242/how-to-migrate-windows-7-to-a-solid-state-drive/). To make things clear: I am on windows 10 and my HDD was in the laptop while cloning. Got no errors during the proces.

Now I want to boot from the SSD to test if everything is transferred correctly. However, I cannot get this done. Went into the BIOS to change the boot order (HD at bottom), but no success. Took a look via 'msconfig' in 'Run', under the 'Boot' tab, but there only was my old windows version.

So does anyone has an idea of how to solve this and get my laptop running from my SSD?

Thanks!

There's really no way to determine whether the SSD clone is a bootable, functional drive other than to install it in the system in which it was the recipient of the source drive. I suppose you can just proceed on the basis that it is a viable clone for that HP PC.

Whether you'll be able to boot to the SSD as it's installed in the optical drive's caddy is problematical. As I previously mentioned try HP''s support and hope for the best in terms of some responsive reply. Also, the HP forum where you can raise this query and trust that some user will provide some practical advice.

1. First of all we're assuming that the SSD is a viable clone in that it contains a bootable OS. The fact that the disk-cloning operation apparently was successful in that there were no errors reported during the disk-cloning process is not indicative that the drive is a bootable clone. But we'll assume it is.

2. It's not unusual at all that a laptop/notebook will balk at booting the OS installed in the machine's optical bay caddy. We've run into this situation time & time again. Seems it's more of a crapshoot than anything else.

3. Is it practical for you to install the SSD in the laptop's HDD bay so that it will function as the boot drive and transfer the HDD to the optical bay's caddy to be used as a secondary drive in your system? That's our usual procedure.

4. You might want to check with HP's tech support.

5. HP does have a tech support forum and it might be worthwhile to pose your query to that forum. Hopefully you'll reach users who've experienced the same problem.

Hey ArtPog,

I am not sure the SSd contains a bootable OS. How should I check that?

About the switching: HDD is 1.8" and SSD 2.5", so that won't be an option.
Thanks for the help!
