Hey guys, I’m building my first system, have a i7-4790k installed on a ASUS Z97-PRO motherboard and a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card (all parts donated to me by an old friend). I’ve been recommended to a 650 watt PSU. Does that sound pretty normal? Too high or low? I’m not going to pretend I know a ton, so all and any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Assuming you have a normal rig there (2-3 drives, 2-4 sticks of ram), 450 W would be plenty if no OC, with OC I would go for 550 W, but that's about it. 650 W is too much. Of course, talking about quality units, that are real 450-550 W, not some brick that says 750 W on label while in reality is 300 W max.

I’m planning on installing a 120 SSD and a 1 or 2 TB hard drive, and 16GB RAM. I figure I can always upgrade RAM if I need to later, though I think that’s a good start. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to having something like a 650 or 750?

Not really with your system.

Now if you plan on building a new higher end machine later then it might be good to invest in a good quality 650W PSU and you can transfer the PSU to the new machine.

Like this one.

If you want more headroom on your power supply than 550W, there is nothing wrong with choosing a 650 or 750 watt supply.

I run my system with 2 RAM sticks, 2 SATA SSD, 1 PCIe SSD, 2 HDD, 1 SATA DVD drive and a GTX 1060 6GB off a 650 watt EVGA Supernova P2.

Yeah, eventually I will want to, but I figure this setup will be a step in the right direction. That seems like a good option to me, and the price ain’t too bad either! I appreciate the help!
