Hello.

For Christmas I am going to be getting the following bundle:

https://www.awd-it.co.uk/intel-i7-7700-4.2ghz-kabylake-quad-core-cpu-gigabyte-h110m-s2h-motherboard-ddr4-hdmi-4k-bundle.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs5DOuuKv1wIVhgrTCh29WwTREAQYASABEgKadPD_BwE

I am going to buy the ddr4 ram separately. I looked at the motherboard and it says says "Support for DDR4 2400/2133 MHz memory modules". Does this mean If I buy 2666Mhz it will underclock? Is the max speed ram I can have 2400Mhz?

Another question is if the max ram speed I can get is only 2400Mhz obviously i will buy that instead of 2666Mhz, but is there a big fps difference between 2400Mhz and 2666Mhz?

Thanks.

Solution

Buy it in a matching pair for DUAL Channel mode. :)

Will run slightly faster

If the motherboard says that is supports 2400/2133 MHz modules, then it would not support a 2666. Best case scenario would be that it would underclock the RAM, worst case scenario is that the RAM simply would not work. As for an fps boost, RAM does not affect your fps in any way. That is almost entirely your CPU and GPU that determines that.

Thanks! Another question I forgot to include was does it matter if the ram I buy is single or dual channel for that motherboard? Thanks.

You need to buy a dual channel kit.

That's 2x 4GB, 2x 8GB.

Does this mean I cannot buy single channel ram? I would really prefer to get 1x8 Gb at Christmas and then save up some more money so I can Get another 1x8 gb. Will there be a problem if I get 1x8 gb?Thanks!

Needs to be a matching pair.

That's why they call them Dual Channel kits.

So if I only had 1x8gb in the ram slot it wouldn't work?

It will work with one, but if you get another 8GB it might not work in dual channel mode because they won't match. Could also not work together at all.

That's why you need to by a dual channel kit.

So can you tell me if this 'theory' would work:

On Christmas I get 1x8 Gb of Hyper X ddr4 2400Mhz ram, and then a month later I get the exact same Hyper X 1x8gb 2400Mhz ram. Would this work?

NO, I said more than likely it won't work.

And if it doesn't you wasted your money.

The ONLY way to be sure is to buy the Dual Channel kit.

They are matched pairs to work in dual channel mode.

I just done the maths and it should work out! I should have JUST enough to get the bundle + 16gb of 2400Mhz ram included with it. Thanks for the help everyone!

There you go, you will be set.

That's a 2x 8GB Kit right?
