So i know they both have practically the same performance, one beating the other in some cases, and they'll both do the same in vr but I'm also considering maybe buying a 4k monitor and I don't know which would be the better buy. I know the 980 ti has 6gb of vram and the 1070 has 8gb but at 4k I heard it barely touches th 6gb mark. Plus on eBay I can get a 980 ti like $60 cheaper than a gtx 1070. And I know your about to say "at that res you should really be going for a gtx 1080 or 1080 ti" but I can't afford the the 1080 or the 1080 ti so I'm stuck with this. I could really used some pro help.

Solution
It depends on how long it will take to get that extra $50, if it's like a week or so then I'd wait but if it's going to be like a month or longer then I'd go with the 1070.

Ok, the reason I was asking was the GTX 1070 ti is better then both the 1070/980 ti and is about $450, the performance is very close to the 1080 and would be better for 4K.

Between the 1070 and 980 ti I would go with the 1070.

In your opinion should i save up for the 1070 ti or should i go for the 1070?

If it's a custom cooler 980ti that's slightly better than a 980ti reference card you see in most tests. So the performance is something like this 980ti (custom) > 1070ti > 980ti > 1070, and by custom I mean the good ones, like G1, Asus Strix, Kingpin, EVGA SC.

Also neither card will be enough for 4K on all games. Games like Witcher 3 or other games that need a lot of power, will not run at 60fps Ultra. My old card ran 35 fps at ultra.

1. If the 1070 ti is close in performance to a 1080 then how is a 980ti > 1070ti? that makes no sense.
2. i dont plan on playing the witcher3 im not really interested in that game so i dont worry about that. The most intensive game i plan on playing is probably Crysis 3 and ive seen the 1070 run it at 4k 45ish fs which is playable.

you would be MUCH better off getting a 1440p monitor

you want minimum a gtx 1080 ti for 4k, a gtx 1080 ti gets 40 - 50 fps at 4k on crysis 3

no way a 1070 can do close to that unless you turn the settings way down

Yes it can If you watch reviews on youtube people turn off aa and lower one or 2 things and it gets playable frames. and i said earlier that i know a 1080 ti is recommended but if you read i couldnt afford it.

I have an MSI GTX 1070 w/ a NZXT Kraken G10 bracket attached, connected to a ThermalTake Riiing 3.0 240 Water cooler. The most recent games I've played on it are Wolfenstein II The New Colossus and Call Of Duty WWII. Both of them run at 3840x2160 w/ "High" settings. They run really smooth and the GPU doesn't get too hot either.
The CPU on it is a Ryzen 7 1700 and has 64GB of memory (Corsair Vengeance LED 4x16GB , PC4 24000)

never trust youtube videos at all, people OFTEN use lower settings/stronger hardware to fake for views

which is why i strongly recommend a 1440p monitor for you

if you need to lower settings to less then high to get playable frame rates then it is not worth it
