Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read my post and help me out.

I have a custom built PC that had been working for years, then one day out of the blue it froze up while gaming. I had to do a hard shut down and upon starting it back up I got a black screen that says, "Reboot and select proper media device". I'm unable to boot windows and I either get the error message I mentioned before or just a black screen with a blinking cursor after the initial bios splash screen. Before the crash I had not installed anything new on the PC except upgrade to Windows 10 months ago when it was offered for free. Now I can't even get windows to boot

I've already tried swapping SATA cables, tried using system repair to no avail, changed boot priority in BIOS, and now I can't find any files files on the hard drive when connecting it to a laptop via SATA to USB adapter.

There is nothing I can't live without that is on the potential dead hard drive, I would just like to know for sure that it is dead before purchasing a new one. I appreciate any help you guys could offer, I'll post some computer specs below.

Windows 10 (Via free upgrade, Installed 7 originally)
Intel Core i5-3570K CPU @ 3.4GHz
ASUS p8z77-v LK MotherBoard- Bios version 0908
GEFORCE GTX 660
8GB of DDR3 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD

Unfortunately, Seagate has a bit of a nasty history of drive failures. Based on your testing, it would seem that the drive is in fact dead. There is one more test you can perform, and that is to see if the drive is even spinning up when connecting the drive to your laptop. If it isn't spinning, then it is most certainly dead.
