my asus p5e q-fan controls suddenly not working. the CPU fan is on full all the time. It was intermittent between full and reduced for a while. is this a hardware component fault? Tried reflashing BIOS but no change. MOBO 10-yo but still plays latest games with Q6600 OC'd on air.

I suspect it is a HW fault as sometimes it slows down for a minute but then goes full speed again.

solved: the fan motor was faulty, not the mobo, so got a 2nd hand one from ebay for £10.

Thanks for replying.

I figured so. My dad has successfully replaced capacitors on mobos to keep even newer computers going in this time but I promised my wife after our kid was born a year ago I wouldn't be upgrading the whole machine for a while so trying to resist for a bit longer.

Running Win10 which still gives me a decent FPS for Witcher and BF3 which are the most demanding games I play
GFX - GTX 970
PSU - Seasonic 850W, quiet and solid
I've got 8GB RAM platinum something running at 900
CPU Q6600 running at x7 with FSB at 450 which gives a nice solid OC with arctic cooler and internal air piping for max cooling.
SSDs for all drives.

Didn't have probs until a month or so ago when the CPU fan went intermittently full speed for a bit then back down again just when browsing. Now, the q-fan settings do nothing, so its noisy at full speed all evening, games or not.

tbh I have a new job so I can afford a new rig but I don't have much time to play nowadays. I know its about time to jump but just for the fan noise seems not enough. I could port most of the components though I suppose, which will save money.

So I bought a 2nd hand cooler from ebay for £10. I was dubious at first because the fan case was broken in several places but some superglue fixed that, and then when I plugged it in, nothing happened for the first couple of minutes. I guess it must have just been warming up because eventually it switched on and is now lovely and almost silent when not under load.
