Hi everyone, looking for some suggestions for a family computer (including display) that will be used lightly, but that I will use for photo editing and infrequent gaming (more likely, the kids will play more games)...

You will see from my requirements that it's been over 15 years since my last build -- too many options now and I have no idea where to start. CAD prices if possible - will be shipping to Ontario.

Requirements:
- as future-proof as possible
- quiet! (it will be in a common area)
- SSD for operating system (I have a SATA HDD already)
- fast -- I'd rather spend more to wait less, or more specifically have smooth operation and the ability to play newer games.
- wireless / bluetooth
- large screen (24"?)
- smaller size case - not concerned about appearance, but would rather it not be a full size case

Budget:
Would love to come in under $1500, but can stretch to $2000 if it makes sense.

Looking forward to some ideas so that I can start shopping. I guess as a side note, should I be waiting for xmas pricing? or is there no time like the present?

Honorable
you`re looking at an

CPU i5-8600k
GPU somewhere around 1070 to 1070ti

the new i5s are really nice and outperform the 7th gen i7s for a cheaper price! I would suggest if it`s not a rush to wait for the prrice to stabilize a little bit, the CPU just came out... the motherboards just came out... it`s a little difficult to pinpoint which is the best setup. Order early december.. you should have a clearer picture!

also, New GPUs from nVidia are coming out in around febuary... maybe wait till then for a GPU. you could use either onboard video meanwhile or if you have an older GPU to use...

Canada prices are bit high so I suggest a Ryzen 1600 and RX580 8Gb. You can always get a second to crossfire once games get to much for the 1440p. Got you a headset so the kids can play without game noise.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I reviewed the proposed components and have a few more questions...
- Is there a reason you suggested the ASRock - AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 motherboard vs. alternatives? Seems in reading reviews that ASRock has a good reputation with this board / bios.
- Should I be concerned about the RAM being 3000 mhz vs. less? Is there a reason you suggested the Trident Z? Any experience pairing this with the ASRock board?
- You suggested the Asus RX580 video card, while another post suggested the Sapphire option. Reviews seems to lean towards Sapphire for quiet operation. Thoughts?
- I noticed the Fractal Design (Mini C) case does not have a bay for a DVD writer (though it does have very good reviews). I found a similar model that included one, I wonder if you have any experience with this option (why I might avoid it).

Questions aside - how would the following build sound?

Do you want mATX or ATX case? DIff: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2242043/micro-atx-atx-motherboards-cases.html

With that case I highly suggest you get a full sized motherboard. The ASRock AB350 Pro4 is a good option but bit higher than the MSI that supports more video card slots. The video cards are both fine I just go with the Sapphire because they have been doing AMD video cards the longest. The higher the RAM speed you can get the better for Ryzen. Tho RAM prices are high now so bang for the buck is up to you. If you already have a keyboard and mouse check them. New motherboards tend to only have a single PS2 so one has to be USB or best both.

My mistake - I selected the wrong case.
This is the one I was considering - it's a micro case with 2 5.25" bays.

Case: Fractal Design - Focus G Mini (Black) MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($67.99 @ PC Canada)

Not looking to have more than one video card.

The case you selected is fine as it supports 3 sizes itx, micro, and ATX motherboards. Its got more room inside so your parts stay cooler.

The larger ATX motherboard has more options like more 1x PCIE slots for componants. The MSI I suggested also has 2 X legacy PCI slots to support older cards you may have from 15 years ago.
