Should I buy the RX Vega 56 over the GTX 1070?

I'll be building a new rig in a few weeks. For a few days, I've been having trouble deciding on which graphics card I want to get. For a while, I was decided that I'd go with the 1070, but then I realized that Vega 56 performs just as well or better while offering Freesync, which my monitor does offer. For some reason, I still can't decide whether or not I should go for the Vega 56. Should I?

On much smaller case blower type cooler is better due to heat being dump outside the case directly. But on much bigger case "open air" cooler usually end up being better. Also noise. Those blower type cooler can be very loud when the fan speed start ramping up.

It's a blower style cooler so the heat should actually be less of an issue for the case, no? I'll have a 650W PSU so that's not a problem at all. The 1070Ti does also seem tempting but again, maybe the Freesync on the Vega is going to be worth it. Still cat decide. >.>

I don’t agree with this at all. I have a 1440p 144Hz Gsync monitor with a 1070. I play in borderless window mode since I have a second monitor. When I do a clean driver installation it turns off the setting for Gsync in windowed mode. I can instantly tell when Gsync isn’t active in games like Overwatch and Rocket League where I have 100+ FPS.

If the OP has a freesync monitor I would personally recommend the Vega 56 just because of how great I think Gsync/Freesync are. The current scarcity and price gouging are a problem but if you wait until you can find one for around the price of a 1070 I would go for it. As others have said I strongly prefer open air coolers to these blower style designs too. It’s unfortunate that there aren’t any available from Gigabye, MSI, Asus, etc yet.

How soon do you reckon we'll start seeing non-reference Vega cards? While a lot of titles seem to prefer Nvidia cards, I don't think the FPS boost I'd get with the 1070 Ti is worth it over Freesync.
I don't actually have the monitor yet but I certainly will be buying a 144Hz monitor and there just isn't a monitor with that refresh rate that also features G-sync at a price I'd consider viable. I'd love to wait for an open style cooler for the Vega 56 to be available but I would like to buy the components in late December due to after Christmas sales.

It’s hard to say when the open air coolers will be available. Normally they would be out by now but the scarcity due to miners is probably holding that back. This is the same reason they are selling for over MSRP. Luckily these reference style cards still seem to be performing better than a 1070 in most games. They run hot and loud but they get the job done in terms of performance.
