Hello guys!,

Back in 2012 I bought a cheap refurb Gateway desktop PC (i3 2120 3.3ghz, 6gb ram, 1tb hdd, 300w psu) and popped a low profile/slim Radeon HD 7750 video card in it to play Diablo III and a couple of other games. It served it's purpose well, but I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading this PC again vs. building a new one to play some newer games. I am by no means a hardcore gamer, but do enjoy playing games on decent hardware. I'd like to be able to play some newer racing games like Dirty Rally or F1 2017 (if possible) on my 1080p plasma television. My idea is to get a Logitech g25 wheel and chair setup (something like that), upgrade my pc, and hook it up to my 1080p plasma TV for use.

I was thinking of getting a new Zotac GTX 1050 ti oc low profile/slim video card and a used i5-2400 or 2500 cpu off of eBay for $40-50 for my upgrade. The motherboard supports the cpu and the low profile video card will fit the stock case. Also, would like to get an additional 2gb stick of ram to take up the last open slot on motherboard for a total of qty. (4) x 2gb sticks of ram = 8gb ram in total.

Another reason for doing this upgrade is that I have a $160 amazon gift card that's burning a hole in my pocket ..LOL

1. Is this a worthy/good bang for your buck upgrade?
2. Is the stock 300watt power supply adequate for this upgrade?
3. PC currently has qty. (3) 2gb sticks of ram and (1) open slot on motherboard for another stick. I pulled a stick out to try and get a model number off of the sticker, but every configuration of numbers off the stick that I popped into google returned no results. Will I be ok buying a different brand of ram as long as the specs match what I already have???
4. If I need to get a new psu and cannot properly add more ram, is it time to ditch the idea of upgrading this PC or is dishing out more $$ for a new psu still within a 'worthy upgrade'?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Hmm. Looks like you got one of the open builds, that's good. For the price $99, the Xeon e3 1230v2 would be the best option as it has hyperthreading so'll be basically an i7-3770 without an igpu for less. Games like GTA 5 can seriously benefit from more than 4 threads, so this'll help, as do multi-player drops on some games like WoW and even Diablo III. That would be well worth the upgrade over the older and much less powerful i5 2400/2500. Paired with a 1050ti, it'll be a decent pc but I'd also look into maybe getting a kit of 2x4Gb of 1600/1866MHz ram and running just those 2x sticks as the sticks you have now are running dual/single channel and actually slowing things down there as you get beyond 4Gb used which isn't hard with win10...

It's a Gateway mobo. Just because the cpu physically fits is no guarantee that it's compatible, the bios in pre-built pc's is/can be extremely limited as to exactly what cpus are able to be recognised. Aftermarket mobo's recognize anything that fits in the socket, universal bios for the largest possible sales base. Pre-built pc's are proprietary in that the bios only needs to recognize a select few cpus used in that particular model.

So it's a good chance that unless that i5-2400/2500 was a cpu used in that model line, it'll not be recognized at all, basically gives a bunch of beeps and a black screen.

At this point, rebuilding from scratch using a Ryzen or CoffeeLake i3 would be better money spent.

The gateway mobo is an Acer IPISB-VR. When I search for specs on it, I see the following:

Support Intel (Socket Type – LGA 1155)
* Core i7 (Quad Core)
* Core i5
* Core i3
* Pentium (Dual Core)

I also found this link ( http://www.pc-specs.com/mobo/Gateway/Gateway_DX4860/1163/Compatible_CPUs ) showing compatible cpus for the mobo ..and see some intel i5 3570's used on eBay for $65.

If this is correct, we're talking $200-250 upgrade (new gpu GTX 1050 ti + used cpu i5 3570) vs. $$$? building new pc from scratch? If I spent $500 on a new build, would it be far superior to this upgrade ..would that even be possible ..thoughts? Thank you!

I got 8Gb of 1866 for $12 on ebay.
