My company is planning to implement a VPN solution. We have about 15 staff who can access each other's folders and they all have read, write and delete access to each other's folders. The manager wants this type of access for convenience and business efficiency. The system administrator does not want to have an elaborate audit trail because of its impact on system performance.
With the above mentioned scenario, I am against implementing a VPN solution. But the management wants to go ahead with it and want me to provide a solution for recovery from accidental or deliberate deletion or modifications of data. We are using Windows Server 2012. I want to know if we can attach an external hard disk which will continuously make backup of the server for days, weeks and months and which has facilities similar to Apple's Time Machine. The reason I want this solution is that if a disgruntled employee accesses his colleague's folder and cunningly modifies his/her files or deletes them altogether then we can go back in history using the Time machine type of backup and recover the last usable files. If this is possible then we can be bold and use the VPN with all the existing shortcomings with regard to privileged access of staff to each other's files and folders.
