My company is planning to implement a VPN solution. We have about 15 staff who can access each other's folders and they all have read, write and delete access to each other's folders. The manager wants this type of access for convenience and business efficiency. The system administrator does not want to have an elaborate audit trail because of its impact on system performance.

With the above mentioned scenario, I am against implementing a VPN solution. But the management wants to go ahead with it and want me to provide a solution for recovery from accidental or deliberate deletion or modifications of data. We are using Windows Server 2012. I want to know if we can attach an external hard disk which will continuously make backup of the server for days, weeks and months and which has facilities similar to Apple's Time Machine. The reason I want this solution is that if a disgruntled employee accesses his colleague's folder and cunningly modifies his/her files or deletes them altogether then we can go back in history using the Time machine type of backup and recover the last usable files. If this is possible then we can be bold and use the VPN with all the existing shortcomings with regard to privileged access of staff to each other's files and folders.

I thought System Restore only recovered Windows system files, but I guess you can recover any file by right-clicking the folder and selecting 'Restore Previous Versions'.

I have never tried it, but I find regular System Restore pretty useful.

You may need to buy a backup NAS or SAN to really safeguard the data.

A ZFS file system, Freenas or Nas4free, is able to take snapshots of all data as often as you like and store those snapshots for an infinite amount of time, or at least till the storage fills.

Simply clone your data over to the ZFS server and if anything happens to your data you can restore it.

Do note that what you are asking about is a backup solution and System Restore is not a backup solution.

How much data do you need backed up?

Another solution could be Crashplan business.

https://www.crashplan.com/en-us/business/

$10 a month for unlimited backup space and unlimited file history on their cloud platform.

Although depending on how sensitive your data is and other regulations it may not be feasible.

Macrium Reflect Server

You can capture as many intermediate images as you desire and have space for.

I use the Home version to do exactly that, but the Server level should work for your company.
Also, consider a dedicated NAS, instead of just a USB connected drive.
