I was about to buy the new thor ragnarok on amazon for a blu-ray copy but I wasn't sure if my optical drive can even play blu-ray discs. My optical drive is the TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-224DB ATA Device. If it can't play the blu-ray I can always buy the DVD version but I think I heard someone say the Blu-Ray discs have better quality.

Solution
Bluray discs are larger in space so movies come in 1080p and uncompressed pcm 7.1 sound.

Dvds are 720p and compressed dolby dts 5.1

Blurays is worth it if you have a lounge room setup otherwise dvd on your computer will be fine.

Your dvd disc drive isnt a bluray player

720 × 576 is the max resolution of a dvd. Thats not even close the 1280*720 that hd is.
