Hello,

I am uncertain as to exactly which brand of PSU to purchase for my first PC. I believe the ideal Watt range for by build lays somewhere in between 650 and 750 Watts. My main specs are as follows:

CPU: i7 7700k 4.2 GHz
GPU: ASUS ROG GTX 1070 STRIX 8GB
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus IX HERO Z270
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH D-15 cooler

I have been researching this build for while now. Nevertheless, the power supply remains my only area of concern. I don't plan to overclock. However, I will be using the PC or gaming, modding and video editing at around 10-12 hours per day. I know some individuals 'luck-out' in the silicon lottery. I'd thus like to make sure I have the best chances of success.

Since this build is pricey already, I don't mind having to pay more for a premium PSU. I would love to have that peace of mind knowing I made a well-informed and intelligent purchase. So, what PSU should I buy?

Thanks for reading through this lengthy question. I hope I don't come off as too naive or uneducated about PCs.

Regards,

Luke

For what you do and no overclocking would 550 watt be fine, but if you want 650watt would do great as well, gave both here.

with these two series being gold rated are there no efficiency "problems" when being even at idle.If wanting to upgrade to a gtx 1080 ti for instance could the 650watt be a better choice.
If you want more options are those there too, these are good price performance wise. Other wise if you want the best for a certain budget give that max budget.:)

Vic 40,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I was hedging towards settling on a 650watt 80 + Gold/Platinum psu. Thanks for your recommendations. My total budget is around $2200 usd (nzd $3500). I saw an EVGA SuperNOVA 650W P2 80+ PLATINUM that looked promising, however, I have seen that this brand can have some stuff-ups. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/6p8H99/evga-power-supply-220p20650x1
Does there exist a brand that is consistently reliable, or is it always a roll of the dice?

No. Each brand retails different model PSUs which can be lower quality or higher quality. Also, brands like EVGA or Corsair don't actually make their PSU internals.

550w is plenty for your build, even when overclocking.

I suggest one of these (the cheapest at the time will do): https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/qYTrxr,3zNypg,sMM323/

Also, you mention not overclocking. If you aren't there is little point to the unlocked CPU + motherboard with the expensive HSF. You could use a locked CPU with a B250 motherboard with stock cooler /$20 M9i.

Also, silicon lottery mainly comes into play when overclocking.

Rexper,

Yes, you're right. I suppose I am expecting slightly too much from PSUs. It really is a role of the dice.
If I happen to purchase a defective unit then at least there's always the option to refund and return.

Thanks!

Keeping with just one gpu should a 550watt still be fine if you use a gtx 1070,but if upgrading to a 1080 ti would you want to use a 650watt just to be sure. Depends on which one as well.
Some New Zealand options,

guess there are more, but not given by the pcpartpicker.Really wonder if the RMx is worth the price premium over the TXM,especially with those two very good 750watt psu's near it's price point.

Thank you for accommodating your searches to New Zealand! It can be difficult getting certain components here, generally only power supplies though.

Just curious though, what's the difference between RMx and TXM?
