Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help solve a mystery; my new system shuts down (off) during graphics heavy game play. Sometimes it will run for hours at the highest settings - sometimes it will shut down after 5 minutes.

Intel i7 - 8700 Coffee Lake 6/12
Gigabyte Z370 Ultra Gaming Aorus MB
Gigabyte Geforce 1080 Windforce
Corsair H115i Water Cooler
Corsair Vengence RGB 16GB (2x8) 3466 DDR4
Corsair 650W PowerSupply

The facts:
Bios Upgraded to F6
All new game ready drivers installed
No temps get higher than 60C
All fans/pumps working and ramping with temps
I switched another videocard (gv-n7600c-2gd) out and it still died (but seemed to run longer?)
I switched other RAM out and it still died
Power supply switch needs to be cycled off/on to restart after failing
Total system wattage should not draw more than 450W
System was build 2 weeks ago - all default speeds/settings in BIOS
Never been overclocked/tweaked.
Running a ton of loggers and monitors shows no spikes or weird behavior prior to shutting off on any device
Systems runs 100% fine in non game environments
System runs 100% fine in game until it just shuts down :/

I'm at a total loss - any ideas are welcome!

Solution

While that is one of the better Corsair units, that doesn't mean that there couldn't be an issue with it. I would make sure that ALL connections from the PSU are full inserted and tight in their appropriate places, particularly the connections to the GPU.

Sudden shutdowns or crashes are indicative of some kind of power issue. What EXACT model of Corsair PSU do you have? Some are better than others.

This never occurred to me - is it possible that this would shut down the system?

I don't have the memory that I swapped out (borrowed from a colleague) but I'll check to see that it wasn't by chance 2666.

Sorry - should have listed it:
Corsair CP-9020038-NA CORSAIR TX SERIES 650W ATX V2 PS/2 POWER SUPPLY

Solution
I believe the Corsair CP-9020038-NA variant of the TX line was made by Channel Well Technology. Also, how old is that PSU? I could swear it's a ten year old design, although I could be mistaken. If possible, borrow another PSU, and see if the problem persists.

Replaced PSU with EVGA 850GQ - seems to have solved the problem. Thanks everyone!

Yes - both are connected.
