Hello folks. I've had several issues with a build from last December. Build list is here, with Windows 7 on the SSD:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wdMQcc

From day 1, my mobo would randomly (and a majority of the time) give me one of two errors before entering Windows: the "disk read error" error, or the "insert boot disk" error. Entering the boot menu and selecting the SSD (which is properly step 0 in the order) usually fixed the error, though sometimes it would attempt to start windows and freeze before the logo formed. Occasionally the boot menu would not recognize the SSD, but after restarting it usually would.

Fast forward 10 months to 3 weeks ago, and the computer won't turn on. The mobo's 5Vsb light blinks with my current PSU and when I tried using an old PSU. EVGA swapped the mobo for me, and the new board worked...twice. Third time it started powering on and after 2-3 seconds shut down, and the 5Vsb light is back. Tried my old PSU, and same results as the first mobo.

I figured something is shorting my mobo, so I obtained a multimeter and tested the PSU. All rails on the 24-pin are just slightly above the stated voltage, which I understand is normal. At this point I don't know what the issue could be. The case is small and cramped; a local shop said it was probably that the wires were all smashed in a small area causing a short, but all cables, whether power or SATA or other, are coated and have no visible damage.

I bought a new case and mobo to give me more room to work (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k3tJYr), but I was hoping to narrow down the issue so I could continue using the same components if possible. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas on what the issue is or how to further troubleshoot I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

You said "a local shop said it was probably that the wires were all smashed in a small area causing a short". My guess is they may be right. Try changing the Sata cable connecting your SSD to the motherboard. Although the cable may have no visible damage on the outside, there could possibly be a faulty connection on the inside, especially at the ends of the cable where it joins the connector.

I had this problem myself and just like you, because the cable look fine on the outside, i kept trying to reuse it several times and kept having problems. Since it's not a complete break, but rather a faulty or loose connection, it will work sometimes and not others. I finally threw the cable out and the problems went away.

Thanks rock. Did the SATA cable problem also kill your motherboard? I'll swap the cable to hopefully fix the intermittent non-recognition of the SSD, but curious if that problem would also be the cause of damage to the mobo.

No, i never had any problem with my motherboard after i switched sata cables.
