Hi folks,

Looking for some advice in troubleshooting my 2 year home built desktop. Essentially a few weeks a go, my computer started crashing, meaning complete stop and power off (No BSOD, error messages etc.) and immediate reboot. It happens at random times. Usually when I do something with a browser and I am clicking on a link or button. But it does happen when running a Windows app. But for instance when I play MW3 it will go for 30+ minutes then crash.

I have read since it completely shutting down, that most likely it is the PSU. I have a EVGA G1 gold PSU. I have started the warranty process, not sure how long that would take.

I have gone and reset all the components including the CPU. I have also checked temps and everything that way seems to be good.

I have also run memtest and it did return 3 errors. From I have read even 1 is bad but I don't know if that is the cause.

Thanks for looking

the EVGA G1 gold PSU is not a good unit and is most probably the cause
PSU Tier list tier 1-2 are good for gaming

I would recommend an EVGA SuperNova Gold G2 / or new G3 /GS / GQ, Platinum P2 / PS, or Titanium T2 or a Seasonic M12-II Evo or S12-II
GOOD PSU EVGA is a B2, G2, G3, P2, GS, PS, or T2. Avoid the EVGA B1 and G1 series/ I bought a EVGA G3 with 7year garentee

No way dude.
you can use a super cheap power supply and be fine... the g1 is just fine for gaming... perhaps not overclocking.
I have used everything from my G2 down to old crappy rosewill PSUs from the early 2000s... that has never been a problem You're power supply could be bad, but your not going to crash because your using a cheaper EVGA as opposed to a higher end one.

The higher tier PSUs are needed if you care about efficiency and stable overclocking and modularity... thats about it.

your ram failed the memtest! haha I would certainly try the test with 1 stick at a time and see if its just one bad dimm if the RMA process doesn't fix your issue.

I ran memtest86 a couple more times and received between 1-3 errors per run. I am going move forward and pick up some new ram and warranty the PSU. Thanks to both of you for your input.

The unstable voltage from the PSU must have been giving your ram problem... future reference though you really should not be failing memtest86 like that. Glad you got it going. G3 is a dooooope PSU.
