Hi All,

Based in Sydney Australia, these are my current specs:

i5 6600K (OC'd to 4.4ghz)
MSI Z170 MBO
GTX 1080 (upgraded from GTX 970)

1 .I wanted to get some feedback as to whether a CPU upgrade is necessary.
2. If so, what CPUs are recommendable with my motherboard?

I've seen mixed reviews and benchmarks on youtube with comparisons between i7 CPUs, some show a solid increase, whilst others display a marginal increase only.

I do game on 4K, most games run quite smoothly. I haven't been able to test battlefront 2 yet though would like to know whether a definite CPU is worth upgrading for comes coming out in the next couple of years. I'm opt to upgrading only if it's really recommended, otherwise, happy to stick with what I have or wait for another generation of CPUs.

Feedback would be much appreciated.

I realize this is a few days old but if you're looking for better performance at 4k, a gpu upgrade would be needed. I'm using a 6600k and a 1080ti and for the most part I can max out games at 4k and maintain 60fps. CPU is definitely not the bottleneck here. A few demanding games I need to put the settings lower or run a custom resolution (ex:3200x1800) to keep settings on ultra. Since you already have a 1080, I would recommend waiting until the next generation of cards from Nvidia and upgrade to that. If you're in a rush, a 1080ti or titan xp would give you pretty decent results but also be very costly.
At 4K the difference would be even less than if you were gaming at 1080p. I would say install MSI Afterburner and enable On Screen Display to monitor CPU and GPU usage, and if your CPU is at 99-100% while your GPU is at less than 99-100%, depending on how much and how often and how many frames per second you think you are losing you can decide for yourself if an i7 would benefit you.

Thanks for the response Volkgren.

I'll do as recommended and take your notes on board.

As a general guide do you think I'm good to go for the next year or two before waiting to upgrade CPU and MOBO?
