Hi, I’ve never had to make an account before because I never had anything to contribute. This was always my number 1 source to fix problems I couldn’t handle myself (through other threads.) but now I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I’ll walk you through the situation and what I’ve tried.
One night I was watching anime, doing light tasks and was zoning out so I started up a practice tool game on League of Legends as you might know is a relatively low demand game. That’s when it happened; my computer shut off and I saw sparks inside and smoke. I immediately shut off the power. I took apart some of my computer and followed other threads instructions to look thoroughly for damage and identify anything that smelled like smoke.
Other threads suggested the PSU was suspect and in some cases yeah there were a few poorly chosen brand PSUs but I don’t think my corsair RM850 had any problems. I had the PSU’s air supply isolated. Fan down and system sat on a bookshelf with a case dustfilter, so it had no suffocation problems. I gave it a smell test, nothing that smelled like burning. I crossed off my PSU from the suspect list.
Now, where the burning smell was coming from; both my corsair H100i’s radiator reeked of burning. However, I have my h100i at the top of my case and the sparks originated from the middle. Which brings me to my GPU; my gigabyte gtx 980 upon further examination I can see a burn scorch mark between the PCB and the metal heatsink.
I want to know my next course of action; my system is almost 2 years old and I am the only owner of all parts; my gtx 980 should still be under warranty and I am in the process of trying to get an RMA done.
Now my next problem, I have tried to turn my system on with the intent of using it for light task; now my fans start ramping up very fast and I opened up Corsair Link to turn the speeds down and noticed my CPU temps were reading all 99C
I turned off my system. Now I am writing this thread as I want multiple inputs on what to do. I am thinking of checking my AIO cooler when I have more light to work with. It is firmly clamped onto the cpu and I have already replaced the thermal paste when the incident happened. But maybe I need to clean it up and double check my connections.
Edit: did another try, temps no longer reading 99C, but still a little high at 60-70 per cpu core usually start temps were 34-42 so I probably still need to reapply thermal paste

I have also never overclocked any of my parts.
I will now list all my computer specs:
CPU: Core i7 4790k
GPU: gigabyte GTX 980
PSU: Corsair RM850
AIO cooler: Corsair H100i
Motherboard: Z97X-Gaming 3
Case: NZXT H440
16gb of ram and a 240gb SSD

Please help. And Thank you.

Yeah, I’m looking for any suggestions and inputs; I’ve never had to RMA anything before (what should I do.) and I was wondering why this happened in the first place!

Is your computer plugged into a surge protector of any kind?

Yeah, it’s plugged into a surge protector that’s properly grounded with no loose connections anywhere. So do I email gigabyte or something about the card and explain my situation?
