Do I need a wireless extender or wireless access point?

On the second floor there is a SMCD3GN modem connted to a DIR-826L router. I am on the third floor roughly 20 metres away. My room does receive wifi but the speed is very slow (anywhere from 10-33 KB/s and upward to 300KB/s if I go towards router).I currently have an ethernet cable connected to my Desktop PC from the router and the speeds are 27.84 Mbps download and 2.43 Mbps upload. I don't require streaming on my mobile devices, only want the wifi capability to connect quicker on apps.

I am thinking a wireless access point is better for me but what kind of wireless access point do I get? My desktop PC does not have wifi capabilities and require an Ethernet cable plugged in to access the internet. I live in Canada so I will most likely be purchasing off newegg.ca or canadacomputers.com. Thank you for looking!

In general unless you need the some special feature a real AP has, like PoE, you are better off using a router. You can buy a router that has a AP option but pretty much any router can be made to function as a AP. All you do is assign it a LAN ip that does not conflict with your network, turn off the DHCP function, and plug the cable from the main router into a LAN port. Since most router has 4 lan ports you will have 3 extra.

Interesting, I might just get a new router. I do not need features of an access point like PoE. So I can grab any cheap router such as from here: http://www.canadacomputers.com/search_results.php?search_in=&keywords=router, have it connect to my PC and change its ip address to an ip address acceptable to my current router and turn off DHCP? And with the 4 lan ports 1 of them will be for my Ethernet cable from main router and I can use any of the remaining 3 ports for Desktop PCs?
