Hello for Christmas i am going to build a Pc. I found a good graphic card Here (If there are any better graphics cards around the 250-350 range that are worth the cost feel free to list them. I was looking for a processor and Newegg is having a killer sale for there intel processors Here. I have two options the Intel Core i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz or the Intel Core i5-7600K @ 3.80GHz. I am going to be doing video editing on programs such as After Effects and Sony Vegas. What processor is more worth it the i7 or i5?

Solution

Not for productivity.

The 8400 has six cores and no (extra) threads at less than 4.0GHz. (Edit: Technically 6 core/6 thread)

The 7700k has 4 cores/8 threads at 4.5GHz

The ONLY upside would be the fact that you could later upgrade to the 8700k, which like I said, is easily the best all around CPU out right now.

The problem is availability, and price. A good Z370 board is going to be almost $300 and...

i'd agree with nitinvaid20, but I would say the 7700k is the much better chip, and worth the extra IMO. It's faster out of the box, is still one of the best gaming CPU's you can get (despite Coffee Lake release) and will stand in you good stead for at least a year or two. The 7600k is a 4c/4t CPU and is limited by that. It's still a decent gamer, and will power most high end GPU's very well, however the 7700k wins hands down and will give you more longevity with newer AAA games, where threads matter more than just cores/clockspeed.

In this case, i'd get the 7700k as games become more thread friendly, which the 7700k can shine in for another year or two at least. The 7600k will be found wanting in that same time frame.

If you're doing any kind of productivity work the extra threads will help greatly.

For gaming there isn't too much of a difference but for editing you're going to want the 7700k it will EASILY beat out the 7600k in any program that utilizes all cores/threads.

And if you can find a 1070 for the right price that would be better. How the prices on 1060's are its not even a sale... Those things should only be $240 tops.

How does this Part List look?

Or you could go with something like this and be on the current platform with the ability to upgrade to newer processors. Just a thought.

I changed my list. UPDATED. It just depends on how much money that I have/Get. I might changed graphics card don't know tho, the one I have is good for its price.

It's fine, but like I said if you do more productivity work the 7700k is well worth the extra $$$. Like the other guy said you could upgrade the MB to Z370 and be able to upgrade to the six-core CPU's which would be way better.

Talking gaming; the 7700k is second to none except the 8700k.
And as far as productivity, the 8400 that the other guy suggested is roughly on par with the 7700k, but can't touch the 8700k.

That build is better, but if you can spring a bit in the GPU area that would be better. The Asus Dual is nothing special. If you can get a ROG Strix, or an MSI Gaming X either of those would be substantially better. If not for MSI's refusal to change their color scheme I would have been using a Gaming X in all my rigs so far.

Like I said earlier, prices on 1060's are stupid. They shouldn't be more than $240 even for the best of them. Thank the cryptominers for that... But it would almost be more worth it just to spring a bit and grab a 1070 if you can find it for a decent price. I wouldn't pay more than $400 for one.

I don't have alot of money to spend so I am going to stick with the 7700k.

Your build is great and would give you great gaming performance. For the same money though you could have the 8600k and overclocked it it is awesome. Plus you would have an upgrade path from the newer chipset.

I5 8400? so i5 8400 Coffee Lake 6-Core is better than i7-7700K. Also Will the i5 be better for editing? And the gaming wont be that big of a difference b/c it will mainly use graphics card? I ran it threw a test and it says i7 is better =2874&cmp[]=3097]here But is the cost difference worth it?

Yes the new 6 core i5’s can keep up with the 4 core 8 thread i7’s and you will also be able to upgrade to 6 core 12 thread i7’s later. I wouldn’t limit myself to the 7700k 4 core i7 if i built my PC today.

Yeah checkout some benchmarks. The 8400 as long as you can get it at MSRP has become one of the value kings because it is very near the performance of the last gen i7 but costs so much less. I think Toms has a review and it performs well in games and productivity.

The problem is availability, and price. A good Z370 board is going to be almost $300 and the CPU is hard to get at MSRP and you will spend another $200 on that. They are brand spanking new and there is very limited availability so you are going to be paying premium prices.

If you are willing to wait that would be a better long-term option.

But like I said the 8400 is not as good as the 7700k in productivity or gaming. They would be fairly close in productivity but like I said for gaming the 7700k is second ONLY to the 8700k for the majority of games.

If you're short on cash you'll be spending significantly more on a 8400 and a z370 board.

Ok so the reason why you would get the i5-8400 is that you could sell it later and upgrade to a i7 8700k

Yes. Upgrading to the 8700k later is a MAAAASSSIVE bonus.

The 8700k is on par with the 1800x for productivity and is the best gaming CPU you can buy right now.

But you will be spending a new product premium and you will spend at least $100 more than you would a Z170 board and a 7700k. If the 7700k wasn't on sale I would recommend the Z370 and the 8th gen chip.
