I am looking to upgrade my current set up and I am wanting to upgrade my GTX 660 to a GTX 1060. What I am not to sure on is a new CPU/MB to upgrade with it. I currently have a AMD 6100 Six core CPU and I am looking for an upgrade. So basically I am looking for suggestions for CPUs, is it worth diving into the new i5s like the 8600k? Or are the previous Kaby Lake CPUs better bang for my buck? Are the Ryzens worth it( i dunno if AMD/AMD cpu/gpu advantages are still a thing)?

Every single review i've seen says the i5 8400 is the best gaming CPU out right now for the money. The only downside is the limited availability and the price being above MSRP.

As far as gaming performance/dollar, the 7700k beats out all the high-end Ryzen chips, the only one worth considering would be the 1600. And as far as RAW gaming performance the 8700k and 7700k are still the top dogs.

But if you're looking for a midrange gaming CPU its between the i5 8400 and the Ryzen 1600, furthermore, if you do any kind of editing or rendering, the 1600 would be better as far as midrange.

The best all around CPU is the 8700k if you can spring it. Top notch gaming and nearly as fast as the 1800x in productivity for substantially less money...

For gaming, utterly useless unless paired with a high-end GPU. So I would stick with midrange unless you also plan on a GPU upgrade or you do some SERIOUS video work.
