so im building a gaming pc for christmas with a gtx 1080 ti strix, 16gb ram etc, i was wondering whether i should get a i5 8600k or i7 7700k, i saw that the performance is the same but the i5 has more cores, they are exactly same price both cpus, however the motherboard that i want to get for i7 is z270f and for i5 z370f (the one for i5 is 73$ more expensive) so is it worth going for i5 8600k instead? if i get the z370f it'll also be easier to upgrade in the future to another cpu without having to switch mobo, im really confused what i should do right now
thanks

Solution
Future proofing is hit or miss especially in the CPU department since games especially don't really rely on CPU as much as GPU.

Given the performance of the 8600k and 7700k is about the same right now for gaming, I would get the 8600k just because it is the new architecture and socket. However as you said Mobos are also more expensive.

No.

Nothing is future proof. Everything will be obsolete.

No matter what you buy, you will be replacing it sooner than you likely want. However the 8600k is slightly faster today and will be likely remain relevant longer. Also there will likely be another round of CPUs for that chipset.

So the 8600k is not futureproof, but it will probably serve you longer and the motherboard longer still.

one more question tho ill be using the cpu with be quiet dark rock 3 pro cooler, will the i5 overclock any good? im air cooling so i wont expect anything amazing but how much could i push it?

that cpu is ~95 ? and dark rock is 250W cooler. dual water coolers are 300 ?
I would expect there is no better AIR cooler and that thing can hold its ground against water. Its recommended air cooler for OC 8700k
I've found people claiming 5GHZ on 8700k with that, so same 5GHZ for 8600k should be more-less your target/

future proof is an oxymoron. there is no such thing.
my computer for example the motherboard is 8 years old and so is the CPU and RAM. the GPU and drives have been changed but when I built my system I did not max the motherboard. I got a slower chip, I left room for RAM upgrades, I bought a solid case that will last forever if needed, and that is about all you can do.
I would start with a x370 motherboard and one of the new quad core i3's and the RAM they need. the motherboard is ready for anything, top of the line can throw in an i7 later, RAM and storage slots.
future proof, whatever your definition, is harder with intel as they change active sockets like a pit crew changes tires. AMD's AM4 should be here for a few years yet.

thanks for the quick responds, so far looks like ill go with the i5 because of the extra cores that might be useful in multitasking and also the z370f motherboard will leave room to upgrade with the coffelake i7 when my i5 cant handle it anymore (im expecting minimum 2 years of hard use before replacing it)

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but the latest rumours I've heard have Intel releasing yet another chipset for their upcoming mainstream 8 core CPUs. So AFAIK no one can say for sure whether octo core chips are coming for Z370.

quick edit i decided to go for the i7 8700k for 150$ more, also regarding the mobo z370f how many fan headers does it have? ill use 4 case fans and i wonder if it can support all of them (4 pin connectors)

/are you kidding me? there's no way a motherboard for this price only can support 2 fans, im annoyed so hard right now as i dont want to use splitters and crap like that, it makes everything look makeshit and horrible, are there any other z370 mobos that can support 4 fans?

edit: just remembered that the gpu have 2 fan headers, so should i plug the first 2 fans in the mobo and the other 2 in the gpu?
also if ill do that should the 2 in the back or the 2 in front be connected to the gpu?

i saw that the z370f mobo has support for water cooling, i was thinking if i go with the silent loop 240 from be quiet and mount it in the front instead of 2 140mm intake fans would it be a good idea? that way i dont need to use splitters for fans and all that stuff

It would be better if you could mount the water cooler outside or near the top of the case. The air flowing across it will otherwise heat up the inside of your case.

you get better temps from mounting it on the front, anyway found out that even if i watercool i still need to connect the 2 fans from radiator in some fan header but i dont have any fan headers left, and i need 2 more, it looks like last option is to use these dirty fan spliters and go with air cooling or use the gpu fan headers but 2 fans being controlled by mobo and 2 by gpu will be a total mess, i was so excited to build my pc but now im totally lost
