PCIe x16 stopped working, will the x8 slot work for a gtx 1080ti without hindering performance?

Hello All,

My PCIex16 slot on my motherboard just recently stopped working. I tried reseating the card (gtx 970), cleaning with air, checking power ect but the slot did not recognize that a card was inserted. When I switched to the PCLEx8 slot, my card was detected and seems to work fine.

I have two questions.

1) I am going to upgrade to a gtx 1080 ti, will being in the x8 slot drastically effect performance? Most of the stuff I have found online discusses performance when 2 cards are being used, not just one. I did find one site that showed the slots differing by around 1 fps when using single cards (x8 being the low performer) but they were using older Radeon cards. I'm not too concerned about a 1 fps difference, but I would hate to spend all that money on a card to lose out on say 5-10+ fps.

2) Is this just the first sign of a motherboard that is about to die? Everything else seems to be working fine, it just seems to be this one slot that isnt working. I did not experience any power surges or anything, and the motherboard around the slot is unmarked/no visible damage.

When it broke I randomly got a black screen while gaming, and when I rebooted the onboard graphics kicked in. Strangely, the graphics card still powered up and the HDMI still worked, it just was not able to be detected or be used to generate the display. When I tried updating the graphics card drivers, the installation would always fail. There would be a couple seconds here and there when it would be detected, but it would last for less than 30 seconds and then shift to onboard graphics again.

My specs are (2+ year old build, forgot some of the finer details)
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK Motherboard
Nividia gtx 970
Rosewill (?) 750 watt gold certified psu
i7-4790k (4.4 ghz? Not overclocked)
16 gb corsair ddr3 ram
Corsair h110i liquid cooling.

Thank you all in advance for your input!

How much framerate does your 970 lose? I think it's a safe bet that a 1080 Ti will lose a similar amount(in percentage). If x8 cost you 3% on the 970, then it'll probably cost you 3% on the 1080 Ti.

That's a nice motherboard, I don't blame you for still wanting to use it. But if it was me, there's no way I'd spend that kind of money on a new card when I had a malfunctioning motherboard. When you are on a tight budget, yeah, you have to use whatever you have. Otherwise it's better to have functional components. What happens if you install your new videocard and have problems? Is it a Windows or game problem, a motherboard problem, or a problem with the videocard itself? You just make trouble shooting more complicated by using that...
