With my current CPU (i5 750) I'm having a pretty hard time gaming and stuff so I really need an upgrade. With the new generation of Intels CPU's I'm having a pretty hard time deciding what I should get. My budget is ~250 USD (210 euros) for the CPU and around the same for the Motherboard as well. I will probably also have to buy new RAM memories too. My current specs:

Processor: Intel Core i5 750 2.67GHz (needs an upgrade)

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (recently got it)
RAM: 12 GB (Will probably also need an upgrade)

So I'm looking for:

New CPU: ~250 USD
New Mobo: ~250 USD
New RAM: ~180 USD

Lower cost is of course better. I mostly do gaming but sometimes I like to edit videos and stuff like that. Hope you guys can help. Thanks!

That's what I'm thinking, but I am very conservative. Hard to go wrong with i5-8400. Might get better price performance with an OC Ryzen. Unlimited budget, i7-8700K or i5-8600K. They are both fastest you can get.

I'm also looking to upgrade two i7-920 based systems using new parts, so it's a somewhat similar choice.

I'm thinking an i5-8400 build with cheap $100-$125 MB and 8GB ddr4. I looked at and discarded buying a new i5 or i7 from intel 7th gen. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on used MB, CPU and memory. And since the systems are used for gaming I plan intel vs. Ryzen.

Do you think the i5-8400 is the best one?

Any recommendation of a motherboard that works well with the i5 8400?
