Wise people of tomshardware community, i salute you all and have come seeking your help on a difficult subject.

as the title says,I have come to an unique opportunity where i can swap my good old msi gtx 680 lightning 2 gb vram with a evga gtx 960 4 gb vram free of charge. i'm not gonna lose my gtx 680, just gonna give it to my brother and use the gtx 960 if i concur this move. i can still get the 680 back. the question is, which one should i use?!

the thing is, i am not convinced if i should do this move since the gtx 680 is the stronger card performance wise. i'm gonna use it on a 1080p monitor btw. (cpu is i5 3570k @4.2 Ghz)

What made me think about using GTX 960 instead, is that GTX 680 crashes on Playerunknown Battlegrounds due to low video memory. Since the beginnig of time we've been told that 2 gb vram is enough in most cases on 1080p but is that really the case here? Assassins Creed Unity had phyiscs resetting problem on 2 gb vram cards and now PUBG is crashing due to low VRAM.

Does sacrificing some performance in order to gain VRAM is a wise move in 2017? Is the performance THAT noticable between these cards? How about the effect of GTX 680 being a 256 bit bus interfaced card and GTX 960 is 128?

I'm at a loss here.

Most games on high use ~ 2.2-2.4gb vram so the 960 could have better min fps which is important if you notice fps dips.

Sounds like you're able to test these gpus, when it's an option testing is always your best judge.

yeah i went ahead and tried the gtx 960 4 gb and couldn't tell any significant difference between the two on other games BUT, it helped A TON with PUBG. The game doesn't stutter at all anymore, no more crashes caused by lack of VRAM, no more fps drops like you've mentioned. The Max FPS was not too much of a difference too. Guess the extra 2 GB VRAM was worth it after all...
