Today my internet was working fine until i decided to try and add an wifi extender/router down in a room which the signal couldn't reach. i first tried an old wifi extender and plugged it in at the wall port. the wifi seemed to work fine but the LAN didn't so i decided to try and use the old router we had and the same thing happened. i was going to use an Ethernet cable splitter to have a cable going from the port at the wall into a splitter one cable going out of it onto my pc, one going to my new nintendo switch (which is why i needed the extra wifi range) and one going to the wifi extender. but as i was setting it up i noticed that i had no internet on my pc or switch so i stopped and tried to figure out the problem. i used multiple cables (which i made sure worked properly beforehand on other ports) and multiple devices trying to see if they all had the same problem which they did. the strange thing that i found out also is that my pc and 2 laptops i tested said i was connected to a network and displayed the properly connected symbol in the system tray. it also assigned me with an ip address, default gateway, subnet mask, ect. but i still wasn't able to load a web page, steam or discord. no changes to the main router setup were done either.
i am very confused on what it could be and if someone could help me get back up and running that would be great so i could start playing some games again. Thanks!

You can only have one router on a network that has DHCP enabled. Any others need to be setup as access points with the DHCP turned off.

If you want two distinct subnets please advise, as that requires a different setup.

As you found out, wireless extenders work poorly. They need to be placed in an area where the signal is still strong and they increase latency and cut bandwidth in half. A cable works much better.

You can't split an Ethernet cable though, you need to use a switch. One single cable from the main router LAN port to a port on the switch and all other devices attached to various ports on the switch will work fine. You can even use an old router (but not a DSL gateway) configured as an access point by turning off its DHCP, giving it an address on the network that is static and not in the main DHCP range, connect it to the cable with an LAN port (not the WAN port), and attach the other devices to the other LAN ports, if you don't need it you can turn the radio off.

You need to insure that your current router has enough addresses available in its DHCP assignment range, set all the computers to automatically obtain an IP address from the gateway router. Then on each computer open a command prompt and run ipconfig to see what settings each has, insuring that they are correct.

If this did not work, do you have any other routers or devices attached to the network other than the main router?

we have multiple different pc's and another router connected and some ports are on one router and some are on the other. i will have a look at the ip addresses when i get home but they should be fine but ill double check. when i said split the cable i meant with a switch i already had (sorry for the confusing wording) but my main priority is just getting the Ethernet port working
