So when i use the second GPU to connect it to my monitor using DVI, the screen goes black and i can't see nothing

but the second GPU is working fine and has no problem

why can't i use the second GPU for the monitor? I want to use the second one because the first one keep getting heated up, i guess because its close to CPU or something

my motherboard is asus VIII hero and i have 2 gtx 980ti and the monitor is ASUS 24 inch

Solution
You likely have them configured as sli.
That means that the second card is supporting the first.
All monitors need to be attached to the primary card.

You could disable sli and do what you want, but the gaming performance would be reduced.

In sli, the top card will get hotter because of the heat from the bottom card.
Increasing the front case intake airflow is probably your best solution.

Better yet, sell the two GTX980ti cards which are excellent and have resale value.
Replace them with a single GTX1080ti.
