Current System:
OS: Windows 7 32bit
CPU: Intel core i7 870 4 core 2.93GHz (water cooled)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 480
MOBO: Intel DP55WB
RAM: Crucial 8gb
PSU: EVGA 700w
Drives: intel extreme ssd 500gb
Audio: on board intel. I typically use headphones or a simple speaker, so basic embedded audio is ideal for me.
Case: Antec server tower
Windows experience is a 7.5 for what thats worth..

I know at least I will have to upgrade my OS to windows 64bit, but I dont love win10. Maybe I can get a cheap copy of 64bit win8 somewhere? Or is win 10 still a free upgrade? I havent researched that in a while.

It looks like my video card is sort of borderline good now?! In its day it was quite good.

If I have to upgrade processor, my motherboard will have to be upgraded too (its maxed for this chip - I like to typically buy the mid to lower end processors avail and then upgrade to the max one when they are cheeeeeep. I love the intel boards because I've never had one fail and they are very stable. I prefer stability over tweaking out that last 10% of performance. But I know they historically are not known or used for gaming rigs. I dont even know if they would have one now that doesnt suck.

I want to stay intel for the processor and nvidia for the graphics if possible, unless they're way out of sync now. I havent built a machine in quite a while, but I have built a lot in the past.

I have a budget of $500-1000, but I want to spend it wisely, and if it makes sense to wait 6 months on say, the video card, I'm cool with that. Can I get some suggestions so I can excel at the new COD WWII and get a nice stable and fast machine for everything else (Photoshop and basic use) going forward? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it then. Probably not worth sending it back.

What are you doing about Windows 10? I found out there is a way to upgrade Windows 7 for free.

In my opinion Windows 8 is the worst OS Microsoft ever made. Win 10 is not still free. However, there is a free demo available from Microsoft. Simply download the ISO and install it. It can be used indefinitely as of now.

Do you realize 32-bit Windows can only use 4GB of RAM?

There is more but I have to go right now.

Thanks for the info..I suppose I can use win 10. Now you mention it, I do recall 32bit only supporting 4gb. :) My machine says 8gb though.. Maybe its only utilizing 4.

I was just researching intel mobos. It looks like they are no longer making desktop motherboards, so I need an alternative intel-based mobo suggestion.

For gaming Win 10 is where you want to be, support for Win 7 and 8 have all but ended and if you pick them good luck even getting current gen games to run well without proper driver support. The Assistive Technology upgrade is still free until the end of December so take that option and upgrade.

For $500- $1000 you have a ton of options.

Low End " High to Ultra in every Title out Up the GPU for even better.

Thanks for the info! Wow. Some follow up questions.

Do any of the video card options have a thunderbolt output? I have a sweet apple monitor that is definitely sharper than this old dell 24" I'm on.

Is the higher end option really that much faster, or are we talking that last 10-15% faster and you're paying a premium for it?

Do any motherboards have more than 8 esata internally? I have a lot of drives/cdroms. I'm using a expanded esata card now but it has issues.

Why choose i5 over i7 for the higher end?

Any opinion on m2. hard drives? This might be a fun upgrade for c:. I see that some of the motherboards now support it.

1. 1080p.. with a single GPU the difference between a $275 i5, $240 Ryzen or $400 i7 is very little.. all of them will handle 60+fps or damn near it which is all your going to need on a 60hz monitor.

2. LGA2066 is a series waste of money if all your doing is 1080p gaming. $300 main board is just nuts.

3. RX580's are still overpriced. They are on par with a 1060 GTX which you can find cheaper, you could probably find a 1070 GTX on sale the price of the 580 you have listed.

The only reason I listed the i5 over the i7 was for your listed budget, that is a 6 core CPU that will take a 5 GHZ OC fairly easy. Ryzen in that price range are very nice but all of them are behind a 8600K with a beefy overclock when your looking at higher resolutions until API's are tailored more to Ryzen.

Thunderbolt.. that isn't very popular at all on basic consumer GPU's but you can find adapters.

I like the look of the rx580, Ill get that.

Ok so I definitely want to do intel, so I think ill go with a lower end i5 and get a mobo that will support a high end i7 or i9 and ill upgrade when they drop in price, but what is wrong with the lga2066? its the newest, so i my case where Ill upgrade to i9 later, its the most logical choice, right?

Im not seeing decent 8-10 esata port mobos with other chipsets. Does lga 2066 have issues, or its overpriced? I dont really understand the chipset difference yet.

One board that peaked my interest is the Asrock taichi. It has 10 esata ports which I can use and a few m.2 ports for the future. Decent brand?

Thanks for your guys help!

LGA 2066 is HEDT (High-End Desktop) and motherboards are overly expensive. Core i9 is HEDT. The only thing wrong with it is the expensive motherboards.

Z370 mobo is $100 and up.
X299 mobo is $$200 and up. (was $300 and up before more boards came out.)

So basically you're paying a premium price for the HEDT platform when you can get the same gaming performance out of a Z370 platform at $100 less.

*One reason to go with HEDT/X299 is the extra frills that come on the motherboards, such as the eSATA ports you mentioned, or the many other extras.

LGA 2066 "2017" Replaced LGA 2011 "2014 " Which replaced LGA 1366 "2011 " These were/are the high performance lines that would allow the use of Xeons and pricier renamed versions of the same chip. In gaming terms if you were looking at Max resolution and multi GPU setups this is where you wanted to start or if you also needed to render or do other tasks that required the extra expensive muscle or added bells and whistles the lines offered. For basic 1080p single GPU gaming the price/performance ratio was way off when you compared them to LGA 1151/1155/1150/1156.

Ok, thanks so much for all of the replies. I think I have this sorted, and you guys were a huge help. Here is the rig:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/V3dMBP

Rationales (let me know if I've missed something here):
I stayed with the lga 2066 because I'm buying the lowest end i5 the board supports and will upgrade later to the highest end i9 when its reasonably priced. I chose lga2066 for the simple reason that it offers more upgrade ability later, and a tiny performance bump in comparisons I saw.

I chose the gigabyte 1060gtx 6gb gpu because it had great reviews, was faster than the rx580 (and only $20 more) and it had two dvi outputs which will work with my monitors sans sketchy adapter cable (which have no hdmi).

I chose the Asrock Taichi board because it had a ton of esata ports and good compatibility with m.2 and intel, had a decent audio card onboard, and was so flashy with leds everywhere. :) It also was only $200, which is ok with me.

I chose the corsair vengence lpx memory because it was on the approved list for the Taichi and I contemplated going 2666 but it looks like it will run at 3200 (OC) and the price was almost the same as the 2666 RGB.

I blew my budget with the 960 pro M.2 drive because the reviews were convincing and it will really boost the performance!

I chose the corsair h80i cooling setup instead of the h100i because the case I want to use cant support a dual 120mm fan setup and I didnt want to buy a new case.

Thats it! What say yee..

x299 and z270 wont get any new chips so what you have out is it. It's a better starting point to look at z370 if you want a better line of upgrades and potential for higher overclocking. i7 and i9 on x299 are not going to see much of a price drop in their life span this has always how it has been with Intel.

So if you want the best place to start look at a i7 7700k + z270 or a z370 and a i5 8600k. Both offer the same performance you are going to see on x299 with the exception that the z370 has a few more chips to hit the market.

I wouldn't worry about it then. Probably not worth sending it back.
