As the title says i'm looking for a build for around $600. I've already picked out the case which is around $65. I'm going to be using the 650watt psu from the build i'm currently on and i already have 16 gb of ddr4 ram. So basically a build for just the cpu gpu and mobo for around $600.

The Intel system would provide a higher frame rate due to it’s better overclocking head room and increased IPC over the AMD system. However, the AMD side would still crush games at max 1080p settings and high 1440p settings.

For productivity, the AMD is built better for those tasks. You get 4 cores and 8 threads which is better for editing and rendering tasks.

If it were up to me, I would choose the AMD system. Coffee Lake chips are in short supply otherwise I would push you in that direction. The Kaby Lake chips are stuck at the 200 series chipsets with no upgrade path. The AMD system is built on the AM4 platform which AMD has said will be their chipset for the next 4 years. So, your upgrade path is set if you want to throw a newer AM4 chip in later down the road.

Hmmm would it be worth stepping up to the ryzen 7?

They’re both good overclockers. You just need to get a decent cooler if you plan to push your chips to higher clocks.

You could push it up to a Ryzen 7 but you wouldn’t see much benefit in games. If you’re going to dive into rendering and editing a lot then the Ryzen 7 chips would help you there.
