I recently purchased a used HP Envy 17t-j000 (i5-3230, GT 740m, 8GB RAM) off of Facebook marketplace. I installed my own drive (Seagate FireCude 1TB) and installed Windows 10. Everything went fine except that the GT 740m wasn't appearing anywhere and wasn't being recognized when i tried to install drivers, the system would only recognize the Intel HD 4000 graphics. I updated the bios and it didn't help so I installed Windows 8 on the device because that was the operating system it shipped with and I'm still having the same issue.

(Motherboard serial is 720268-501, does this mobo even have a gpu?)

Does anybody have any advice on how to get Windows 8 to recognize my GPU? Or at least have a way I could tell if my GPU is dead or not?

Solution
if the GPU is showing in the Device manager then yes it has but my concern is that if it was attached in the laptop then the Nvidia drivers must have detected it
you can try to use the default bios settings.. or Oope the laptop

You should have check that before buying
