Computer reboots on games

Hey there all, I have been having a problem for a little over a year now that is getting more frequent and now that it's around this time of year I wanted to improve the system. Usually the power kicks off like the reset button was pressed when I'm playing a game. Often it occurs in a section of a game that if I reload from the last save within the same area the reboot will repeat.

I've been told it could be the graphics card going, it could also be the power supply, and I've also been told that it could be a graphics software issue. All is updated so the latter is likely not the issue. I wanted to get a consensus from the community again. The computer is used for school and entertainment. I intend to start using it for running DNA sequencing software and cannot afford to lose my data with a reboot like this. At the same time, I'd like this to last another couple years before I build a new one.

Intel i7 4770
Asus Z87 Pro motherboard
2x8gb gskill 1866
nvidia gtx 780 Ti
Windows 7 64-bit Pro
2 TB HDD

Thank you in advance for your advice!!

it's still a very capable system, so can understand why you wanna keep it.

I'd be thinking PSU. Random shut downs like that (at least in my experience) have been from a failing PSU. You haven't listed your PSU in your specs. What make/model?

Also, what game are you playing when this happens. Is it all games? Is it only saved games, when reloading?

Yes, I left that out somehow:

Corsair HX750, 80 Plus Gold

I had been advised on the importance of the power supply on this forum when I built the system. But that was purchased 4 years ago so I expected something would be starting to go.

Re: keith12,
The games happen for a range of power demands, regardless of reloading or not, from crusader kings 2 to witcher 3. But I do notice that in Fallout 4 the likelihood it will reboot is usually associated with reloads and when I am in the thick of a large fight. For these reasons I wondered if it was the graphics card falling apart. I've noticed I've had to lower my card's quality too. Two years ago when Witcher 3 came out I could run graphics on high no problem, and now I have to use medium. Can graphics processing degrade like that?

your PSU is a good one. At least it has excellent review, being 4 years old. It could be the PSU, I'd imagine max a 3-5 year warranty. If you happened to have a back up that you could try, that would give you a quick answer about the PSU.

Similarly the GPU is getting on too. It could be it's failing. Although the iGPU isn't great, you could switch it over for the sake of seeing if the system is still crashing. Ruling in/out whether it's the 780ti causing the problems. Maybe run a less demanding game at low settings (to cater for the iGPU's lack of power) just to see what happens.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare psu to test this one against. I had to do a little search online to see if I can switch between gpu and my card but nvidia doesn't seem to support a way to do so. Should that be changed in the BIOS? When I switch the cable to the motherboard port I don't know whether I'm switching or not.

The difficulty is that this happens infrequently for lower demanding games and I don't have the hours (would if I could!) to put into it to test that out. Are there any other means of diagnosing the Ti?
