Scary CPU max temp readings during stress test

I'm using an AMD FX-8350 at stock speeds and a Corsair H60 cooler.
So today I replaced the stock thermal paste with some Arctic Silver 5. So far so good, average temps are lower... everything was fine until I ran the OCCT stress test. I let it run for 15 minutes and while average temperatures were less than 50C which is great, the max temp reading was 225C!! That number is not normal and I have no idea what caused it. What do you guys think? By the way I used HW Monitor for temp readings. I don't think it actually got up to 225C though because that would have killed it, but I'm really curious to find out what caused it to read such a high temperature.

I decided to look this up.. apparently there's a few people who have this 12c idle issue. Seems that the correct way to read your temps (or easy way) would be to download AMD's OverDrive software to monitor your CPU

as you said it yourself.. the temp doesn't make any sense at all, your CPU would have burnt out...

I think you should reapply the thermal paste, and do a burn in task .... Then do your full on CPU tests. I guess some sort of air pocket would be viable to blame for this?

what did you clean yourr CPU with?

I cleaned the CPU and the waterblock with some alcohol and I applied some thermal paste in the middle of the CPU. Like a dot. Then I put the CPU block back in. Average idle temp is around 12C and average temp under full load is 47C. If I had done something wrong with apllying the thermal paste, I think average temps would be higher than that. Could this be some sensor issue?

The main thing is that everything is running well now.

There could be some reasons that you got that reading, and yeah.. it could be a temp sensor that just acted up, or it could even be the program showing a bad reading.

It's good to use a couple of programs at the same time to make sure that they correspond to each other, to eliminate issues like this.

Ok I'll try that and see what readings I get

Ok I used HWiNFO, HWMonitor and CoreTemp all at the same time and I let them run for 10 minutes with the polling rate set to 500ms. Most of the time CPU temp readings were exactly the same on all 3 of the programs. I noticed temp readings being different on each program a few times but that was for less than 1 second and then they went back to normal again.

12C at idle? That seems too low. Personally i would reinstall HWmonitor as something just doesn't add up about all these temps. Check in bios what temps that is seeing for the CPU and compare the result to HWmonitor.

lol I thought that too.. but wanted to see some other results

Try what Kenton suggested

12C at idle, OP probably live in Arctica or North Pole.

I checked BIOS and the temperatures are higher there but check this out. When I'm in BIOS the CPU is running at its highest frequency all the time but when I'm in Windows it runs at lower frequencies because it's idling.I think that's why I'm getting such low temps in Windows. Here's an example.

Windows (HWMonitor which I updated recently by the way)

Also my room's ambient temperature isn't that high either... It's around 20C

Thank's for your help gussrtk :) I installed AMD Overdirve and it worked! Idle temps look more normal now, around 20C or 25C and I'm not getting any scary max temperature readings anymore!
Here's a screenshot.

Quick update: I did some caclulations based on the T.j. Max temperature of my CPU and thermal margin readings on Overdrive and I found out that my idle temperatures are between 20-25C and under load temperatures are between 50-55C. Considering that I'm using a liquid cooler and that the CPU is running at stock speeds, are these temperatures normal?

those seam like a lot more reasonable temps. Although I somehow figure you're more like 25-27 would seem right, but as you said your room is around 20c so it aint ruled out either.

Load temp is good, Your max CPU temp is at 62c, so that still gives you quite a bit of head room.

(although i nver use this program, so i don't really see what you're showing there, ill just go by what you say haha)

It shows thermal margin which tells me how much headroom I have left till I hit T.j. max which is 80C for the 8350. So if thermal margin is say... 30C I do 80-30=50C and that's the current temperature of the CPU
