Garbage OC with i7 8700k ?

Hello, I recently bought an i7 8700k and I'm trying to OC it, but I seem to be getting absolutely awful results. Motherboard is MSI Z370 Gaming M5, RAM is 2666 MHz.

I've verified that the CPU is stable at stock.

Now, I tried to set the CPU core ratio from default 47 to 50 to even get a small overclock to 5.0 GHz, but the computer immediately BSODs when running Cinebench on Windows 10 Pro.

The CPU vCore is already at 1.35v and I also set the Load-Line Calibration to max (level 1).

Is my 8700k a bad OC chip? Help is welcome.

Thanks.

You realize setting the LLC to max is going to bring the vcore way above what is safe to operate. That is probably what is shutting down your computer. Try setting it at 5.

Waitng on the MB for my 8600k. Oh by the way they supposedly overclock better then the 8700k. Guess I will find out soon.

I did try the other LLC settings before I set it at 1, but just to be sure I tried setting it at 5 as you advised. The computer won't even boot to Windows at that setting.

I don't think it's overheating because when it does boot to Windows I can check Core Temp and idle temps are around 50C. BIOS also shows similar temperatures.

Cooling solution is not something to write home about, but I have no point in improving it if the computer crashes before it even reaches high-enough temps. Cooler is a Hyper 212 LED Turbo.

Your cooling solution is weak. If you want any chance to hit 5.0ghz stable you will need to get something much better than that. You keep saying when it boots. The computer boots ups using all of it's cores. It is at this point it is most likely at full load. Even if it is for a few milliseconds it is going to heat up fast. If it goes past TJMAX it will not boot.

The Hyper 212 can not handle 5.0ghz. Your system has been overheating.

I didn't know it was possible for a CPU to heat up so much simply during boot O.O

I do have an alternative cooler which I didn't want to install because it's a bit loud. It's the Kraken X62. Would that be enough or should I go with air cooling and buy a new cooler?

Is it? I mean, my 8700k is not delidded and I've heard that the paste Intel put under the heatspreader is pretty awful.

50c at idle is way to high. With the Kraken you will be down to the very low 30's C degrees at worst with a normal 8700K - not delidded! And the sound should not be bad at all providing you have a good auto profile..

The paste is not awful...just not great...but it is more than capable of handling the 8700K with a good CPU cooler at under to 5GHz, its only when you want to go higher or drop temps significantly does delidding come into it's own..But under normal use, even stressed a good AIO or Noctua should be more than able to handle this CPU.

Yes....you either have a bad mount, or are running too much voltage.

OK, apparently I lied and had forgotten my idle temps. I just checked again. It's actually around 30-35 C. Apologies.

Every MSI board I have owned overclocks great. It really depends on getting at least a mid level and upward board. That said, Use the Kraken. Oh and 1.35 is not too much voltage for that cpu.

Alright, I've connected up the Kraken aaaaand... Nothing changed. Temperatures are lower, but the computer still instantly BSODs when I try to run Cinebench. Even at a core voltage of 1.4 volts (it wouldn't even boot to Windows at a lower voltage) and CPU current limit set to max. I don't think this is a temperature issue (besides, wouldn't the CPU throttle instead of crashing if temperatures were the issue?).

All this trouble for even a very modest 5 GHz overclock. I'm starting to think that this CPU is a piece of junk.

Any more advice?

Yep, verfified by voltage sensors in BIOS and using Core Temp in Windows.

No, I have not. Everything works fine on stock settings. The memory is rated 2666 MHz.

I had bad luck too with his i7-8700k. I can not figure out why but i need a very very high vcore to let the cpu do its work... very high? I mean very high.. for 5Ghz i need 1.48v on my Asrock fital1ty Z370 gaming i7 and on the tuf needed 1.46v for 5Ghz. I delidded the cpu so i can have it stable on those vltages but it is not a fun vcore. Really bad cpu.... all reviewers got the bests from Intel to let us buy this shitty cpu

I've tuned 3 different 8700k for customers, and 1 for myself. All of them would do at least 5ghz...2 of them would easily do 5.1, with just an AIO.

Sounds like you just got some bad silicon.
