Later this year I will be constructing a completely new system. I was wondering if I can do something as easy as plugging in my current drive with Windows 10 into the new motherboard, or if I have to use my new drive and install Windows. Anyone have any advice?

Make sure your copy of 10 is tied to your MS account https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

Use a 16GB or higher capacity USB and download 10 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 a day prior to the install. There will probably be security patches or other upgrades between now and then. Best to have the latest version of 10.

Best to start with a clean drive.

Drivers and other stuff on...

There are 3 possible outcomes when moving a drive with an OS on it to a whole new parts config:

1. It boots up just fine.
2. It fails horribly and requires a full reinstall.
3. It works, but you see lingering issues later.

Last year this time, my main PC was #2.
Yesterday and continuing, my wife's PC is at #3. It will probably require a full reinstall to 'fix it'.

Prepare for a full reinstall. You'll be glad you had it, even if you don;t need to do it.

For the licensing and activation of Win 10:
Read and do this before you change any parts:
