Hi! My step dad is a gamer getting into VR, and his PC can't run VR. His budget is $3500-$3600 AUD. Here is what I got.

Notes:
He wanted just an SSD for everything.
He said not to get a water cooler (he's a bit paranoid about it leaking.)
He REALLY does not want a backlit/mechanical keyboard.
He wants an optical drive with blu-ray.

Let me know if you would change anything:

that optical drive is loud. find out what he needs it for. Is he burning stuff or is he watching movies. If he's watching movies he'll probably want a quieter one. If he's burning stuff then that one is fine.

Is he playing FPS games (non-vr)? if he's not then I think spending $$ on 3 24" 1080p monitors for a triple monitor setup will tickle his fancy a LOT more then a single 144hz monitor will. That gpu certainly can drive triple monitor gaming.

Is he streaming content, or rendering videos? The i5-8600k is probably more then he'll ever need as a cpu if he is just gaming and not streaming/rendering.

I'd probably save some $$ on the motherboard and spend more $$ on much faster ram. You'll see some serious performance bumps...

I'd probably leave the keyboard/mouse decision to him. People are particular about their interface devices. I know I am. And frankly, I wouldn't call either of those "gaming" in any sense of the word.

Other then these possible issues or changes I don't see anything wrong with what you put together. Looking good to me. Heck, lets be serious. your build as it is right now is fine. You can ignore my opinion on everything and still make him a kick butt computer.

Thank you for your answer, just have some responses for some of your answers:

1. Forgot to point out he said that noise wasn't an issue (hence why i chose a big air cooler.) But do you know any quiter blu-ray optical drives?

2. There is only room on the table for 1 monitor.

3. Forgot to mention he will not be the only one using it. It's being used by the whole family, but mainly him and me, and I will use it to render/stream.

4. I did think about that, but Wi-Fi is essential, as the router is on the other side of the house... Anyways, do you know any cheaper z370 MoBo's with built-in Wi-Fi that could be a considerable option?

5. I already showed it to him, and he prefers it over the corsair and razer stuff that I'm into. It's not much of a problem though, after all, you look at the monitor, not the keyboard/mouse.

Thanks for taking the time to write out a response!

EDIT: Crap I left out the PSU

1) Plextor usually makes quiet drives, they get a bit noisy when burning but generally they're pretty quiet otherwise. something like this should be ok https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827249088

2) they make triple monitor stands like this - https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Monitor-Adjustable-Screens-STAND-V003P/dp/B01A038O9A you just need to be sure the monitor you get has VESA mounts.

3) then i7 is a nice choise

4) mmmm... I'd strongly advise you to wire it if at all possible. Still if you're stuck on wifi, I'd rather use an add on card then one attached to the motherboard. Never had problem with pci/pci-e add on cards, I have had issues with onboard WIFI. Sometimes you don't have a lot of choice (like in MITX format) but that's a ATX build, you have plenty of slots for wifi cards.

5) cool enough.
