Hello, i was thinking of putting together a cheap ethereum/bitcoin rig. I was thinking something like a rx 570 or rx580 (Used or new?) paired with a cheap cpu, motherboard and ram off ebay. I was just looking at ebay and saw some good deals on i5 2500ks paired with a motherboard and ram. Woud this be fine paired up with a rx 580, and also does it matter about an 4gb or 8gb 580? Thanks

Well, just to clarify, you will not be mining bitcoin with a GPU based rig. You will only be able to mine alt coins such as ethereum like you've mentioned, zcash, monero, and bitcoin gold for example.

The rx 580 is good for mining ONLY once you mod the BIOS to reduce it's power draw. It draws way to much power with stock settings. If you are not willing to do that, you'd be much better off going with the GTX 1060. Ethereum isn't the most profitable for Nvidia cards though, you'd be better off mining an equihash coin.

Yes VRAM matters, but not much unless you wanted to stick with ETH. VRAM is more important for future proofing new coins and resale value of the GPU, once it's time to sell.

As for the CPU choice, you could use a wimpy celeron if you wanted to. CPU strength does not matter as long as it can run your OS without maxing out. Also, ensure you have at least 4GB DDR3 memory for the motherboard, 8GB is also beneficial when you have 2 or more GPUs.

And used vs new is up to you, the 570/580 is new enough to where it shouldn't be an issue, but its your choice in the end. I personally have no issues buying used. All of my mining cards are purchased used, never new.
