Hi, i am new to building a pc
This is a project i started with my little bro who is into fighting games and wants to play em on pc.
We have been slowly buying what i guess is high end components but would really like to know if were on the right track to a working system?

Also any helpful tips on where to go, how to manage this setup?
Help is greatly appreciated guys.

Currently own:
Maximus viii hero mobo
4x4gb 3000mhz ram
Gtx1080 graphics card
850w power source
Cooler master fan for the cpu

Looking to buy:
I7-6700 cpu
960 pro 512gb ssd

Would it make sense running these things together?
Can i get the most out of the components with a setup like this?
He knows more about it than me, but id like some help getting my head around this.
Using it for gaming and most likely vid editing, computer programming stuff? (what hes studying in school)

Thanks for your time guys..

Solution
Well, what cooler you can get depends on what computer case you have.
Or vice versa.
Also how tall your ram is... if it's excessively tall like some of the fancier models are.

I'd recommend either the previous 2 mentioned.

This is an example of a finished build, as long as your ram is low-profile like the one here (doesn't have a taller heatsink) you won't have conflict issues. Just make sure to install the ram and cpu cooler before putting the motherboard in the case, most modern how to build a PC videos will show you that method anyways.

Is Maximus viii hero mobo new and can you return it? Reason I ask because if you can do it, you should get Z370 mobo and 8th gen CPU i7 8700K or 8700. Both have 6 cores/12 threads vs i7 6700 has only 4 cores/8threads. I got Z370 mobo and i7 8700 for total $440.

You really have to check website of Amazon, newegg, B&H, and others constantly. Prices fluctuate quickly due to limited stock and high demand. If you live near microcenter, they have i7 8700K for $380 pick up order only plus $30 discount on Z370 mobo.

newegg and B&H have 8700K for $415 and they are in stock. B&H list 8700 for $340 pre-order. I got AsRock Z370 Killer SLI/ac on sale and with rebate for $100 from newegg.

Thanks for the reply though, i realized i was doing things wrong about half way into buying these parts.. i will keep this in mind tho for future purchasing.

As to your questions

Evga supernova
850w p2 platinum power supply

Hyper 212 evo cooling fan

Also, is this fan good enough to cool everything?
Will the i7-6700 cpu be used to its best potential with this mobo?

And if you can tell me how to reply to you in the thread, i will.

And also feel free to answer in thread.

Thank you sir

You just click the black "post an answer" button at the bottom right of the thread.

The PSU is fine, and the 212 should be fine for a non K series i7.

850W is definitely more than you'd ever need for a single GPU system, and multiple GPU systems aren't a thing anymore really. (Games rarely support it)

There are definitely other cheaper SSD options than a 960 pro:

Thanks for the feedback,

I will aim for that ssd card.

Now, if i use that ssd for my OS, can i use hdd for other memory storage or do i need to use more ssd cards as well? I ask because i was told you cant have both on a system but id like to make sure this is true.

Also, the i7-6700 , will it work right away with the viii hero mobo? I also heard it may or may not. That i also may need an existing cpu to do a flashback or something..?

Sorry for my uneducatedness in this field btw haha

I see, this is great info. Thanks.

So howabout the Noctua NH-D15 or
DarkRock3, evo 212x? Something like these?
Is there a preferred brand?

And what about those coolers that have a little block and 2 hoses attached? Are these viable options as well?
Corsair hydro series H60, arctic liquid freezer 240?

The NH-D15 or DR3 are both good choices, the 212x is still a bit to little though. The Noctua is a little better, but many people don't like it's color scheme.
Brands are kinda useless to follow, because each cooler needs to be evaluated on it's own merits, but Noctua and BeQuiet are both more often then not reliable.

Liquid coolers don't necessarily perform better then air, and definitely not at the same price point of an alternative air cooler. They're more for either a style/look choice or a space constraint choice.
