Low Volume Output from 3.5mm, not USB.

Recently my USB headset broke, accidentally dropped it when cleaning my table. I've had my PC for about 4 years and have only used the USB headset which had an inbuilt soundcard, and USB speakers. When I tried to use apple ear buds as a temporary fix the volume was so low that it was inaudible, I then tried multiple other headphones (3.5mm) and the same problem persisted. I searched google for an answer and the only thing that came up was audio drivers. After completely reinstalling the audio drivers the problem persisted and now im completely stuck. My PC only has an inbuilt soundcard so im not sure if that could be broken. Is there any other way to fix this? Should I buy a PCI Express soundcard? Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Solution
Right click the small speaker icon normally found in the lower right hand screen corner.

Select Playback devices and start exploring all of the windows, tabs, and properties you can find.

Hopefully the low volume is just one of the many configurable settings.

Explore first, check things out (e.g., the sound port being used on the motherboard) and then change only one setting at a time.

Not at all uncommon to discover that some audio related ports are not even connected - especially front panel ports.

Another aspect is that Apple earplugs use a different plug/connection scheme.

Check into TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) and compare the broken USB headset plug connectivity to that of the Apple earbuds.

For example see the first diagram...

Solution
Even a low quality internal PC soundcard shouldn't struggle to drive Apple earbuds; there's certainly a setting problem. Make sure any special settings like volume EQ are disabled; they might be screwing up the output. Also give the rear output ports a try; the front ones might be the problem.

I tried everything you suggested untill I realised that the reason speakers I had plugged in had worked before is because they has a built-in soundcard, so as a somewhat temporary fix tho this problem I have plugged my guitar amp into the PC as it has a soundcard and then I have used the audio output on the amp to use my headphones.
