Those open air (dual and triple fan cards) need a lot of open air space to cool effectively. As they recirculate air. In an SLI arrangement the upper card has very limited room for air circulate. So, it can end up running quite hot. If your motherboard gives a few slots of gap dual open air cards may be work if your case has very good airflow.

For SLI and small cases it is generally recommended to use Reference GPU (blower style). They have high static pressure to pull air through tight spaces and exhaust it directly out the rear. Blower style are noisier though. That is just a price to pay for SLI, compact case and/or poor airflow.

You should note that in SLI. Only some games will see a big improvement. Many will have little or no improvement. Some will take a hit in performance. This is due to increased CPU overhead of SLI in games with no SLI benefit.
