I don't understand why the Ryzen 5 1600 Hex core I was recommended to get is better than my current Athlon X4 860K Quad core despite lower specs (other than core number). Can anyone explain this?

Solution
Ryzen gets a lot more work (~50% more) done per clock tick, which makes it much faster than similarly clocked older generation CPUs. Also, the 1400 and above have multi-threaded cores which enable the CPU to work on up to twice as many things at once. Factor in the two extra cores on top of that and you have something in a whole other league.

It's a different architecture so you cannot really compare specs as if they were equal.

The Ryzen has better IPC and is more efficient.

That is not correct. Hyper-threading is not doing twice the work. There is a worker thread and a staging area for the next thread to be worked on (if one is available). It is misleading and inaccurate to refer to this in the same way as a CPU core.
