Hello all,

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, Ram and Motherboard. I currently have an i7 2700K CPU, Z68 Motherboard and DDR 3 ram.

Would the following be a good upgrade?

My computer is used primarily for gaming and i have an Evga GTX 970 FTW+

Thanks!

I think the prices on Gen 7 CPUs won't change much, but the prices on Motherboards can't be beat. RAM is already pretty cheap too. The only other option I see is to look at a 6 core Gen 8 CPU. I'd like to see all the bugs worked out of the new motherboards before I make the move. I think games will start using more cores eventually so it might be a good move for future proofing, but the cost of gen 8 motherboards is a little painful, and finding an 8600 CPU in stock is difficult right now.

I don't think upgrading to the 7700 can possibly be a bad decision. Waiting for the next 'thing' is just a losing battle in technology :)

Thanks John! Would this be a significant upgrade or a waste of money? My i7 2700k is overclocked to 4.2 and I'll be running my 970 gpu with this new setup until the 1080 ti prices drop.

That's the $64K question. I'm running a 3770K with 970 and have no speed issues (and the 3770 and 2700 have almost identical performance). One of the biggest games I can notice a difference on is Civ VI. We make my buddy host on his 7700 because it cuts the computer's turn time in half (or more). I mostly play OW and my CPU doesn't break a sweat. I'd check to see if the games you play are CPU bound or GPU bound.

I play a lot of WoW which is CPU based. Also Overwatch, FortNite and Battlefield 1. I don't see any lag issues, my computer runs WoW and FortNite at High / Ultra settings. I run Battlefield 1 and Overwatch in high settings. I figure if I upgrade, I can future proof my computer for upcoming games but I'm not sure if I'm wasting money by upgrading now. Maybe it's best to wait until 2018?
